Telkom 8 Mbps out the window

what a suprise that it turned out to be BS like 99.9% of the rumours on here

Telkom announced the 8 mbps upgrade in 2007. You can actually find the article here on MyBB. But, sadly.... It has... um.. taken a while to implement.

Trials were recently rumoured to begin in October, but after having problems with the interfaces on some of the exchanges, Telkom has delayed that.

The latest news from high up is that the trial of 8 mbps will go live for Gauteng users in March 2010. They will be notified before the trial begins.

The good news is that some of the exchanges have already been completely upgraded.

I can confirm that an apartment building near the millpark clinic in sandton has had its users bumped to 8mbit. The exchange is literally across the road

This doesn't surprise me at all with how degraded the copper networks are. Im also quite happy with 4mbit its just that rubbish cap we need bumped up.
What about plans with fiber and ADSL2+ ?

Im sure you guys have seen those recent telkom ads on TV for the world cup about "this is what happens when too many people try to access the itnernet at once...."

Interesingly, our area in Meadowridge, Cape Town, have just had a bunch of pole boxes replaces as well as new cables from the pole to the house. Speaking to the telkom techie, it seems as though Telkom is finally getting around to upgrading some of their old copper.

Already posted this in another thread.
Last week tue my line was taken down by lightning and a tech rolled past my place on saturday to fix and just before he left i asked him about 8mbit and he said it is definitely coming and some users around the exchange have been bumped. That i can confirm as my bro recently moved into an apartment and told me he is synching at 8mbit

so when will the 384 okes be bumped up?..will it happen before the 8 meg upgrade?

its more realistic for the 384 guys than the 8 meg though, so its quite possible it could happen for those okes

no rather keep the lowlevels low, i say degrade to 256 :D

a techie who works with me, worked for telkom. They where testing the 8mb thing and he wonder why they did not gave it to the public yet.

But, 8mb on a normal telephone copper cable, amazing.

ADSL2+ can do much more, but the "last mile" has to be short
