I made the assumption is was a head office... :)

either way, it was where the decision was made if it was a viable option or not!
 
It makes perfect sense actually. If Telkom were to increase the speed, they wouldn't see any benefit financially. Sad, but true. They continue to shaft us...

Listen mate, if you dont wanna believe me I really dont give a ****. Like I said in my previous post Im not the kind of person to make up crap for the fun of it. Im here to post usefull info which all members of this forum can use and do with it what they choose. Just because I made an assumption that the HEAD office was in Joburg means ****! So I got that wrong, and shouldnt have made that assumption... but who gives a rip!

I dont NEED to explain to you that my father has been good mates with this guy while you were probably running around in nappies, and grew up together in Cape Town.. you dont NEED to know that.. gees... :mad:

I have had my line synced now for the past 3 months at 8Meg but im on a DO 1 package so im limited to 384. If I ever do decide to go to 4 Meg im gonna beg and plead if they can put me at 8 Meg since my line syncs perfectly at this speed. (O yeah and the upload synced rate was 8xx) This is in Cape Town, Strand, Main Rd

What faster pastures? HSDPA?? For those of us who use more than a gig or two per month HSDPA is frighteningly expensive. At any rate, speed doesn't really matter. What is it that most users can't do with 4Mbps at the moment (I'm excluding corporates 'cause they can already get more than 4Mbps). I was able to download a linux dvd in under 4 hours. That's fast enough for most people. What we need is higher caps or uncapped ADSL (not that IS express crap).

Tell me, are you part of the original trial or what? I wonder how long they gonna keep it active now that they decided to focus their cash elsewhere
 
No trial or anything. Moved to a new place (about 4-5 year old flats) asked for the Do 1 package and was plesently surprised when my router tells me im synced at 8 Meg. Dont get me wrong im still running at 384 speeds but im synced at 8 Meg.
 
This is really depressing given that nobody wants to deliver fixed line services to us. Everybody (Neotel, IBurst, VC, MTN) just wants to go the wireless route and it seems we either have to take the overly expensive and ageing ADSL or use the highly unreliable wireless. So much for competition...what good will Seacom be if the upper speed limit is 4mbps.

You are only thinking in terms of current pricing structure. We are talking about Telkom's plans for the future. The day may come when Telkom's HSDPA is cheaper than ADSL.

Ya, got to love the amount of hot air Telkom blows up its own behind. What a joke. Although the ad was quite clever, it requires some sort of basic understanding of the way the internet works to even relate, in turn making their customers out to be the most clueless bunch of idiots to ever have stumbled upon this wonder known as the internet. Someone who has never used the internet before just wouldn't get it in my opinion. We know what we have. We know what we want. And Telkom aint giving it to us. No amount of self-glorifying adverts is going to change that.

As much as cable theft is a problem in SA (and let's face it, it is), with the ridiculous prices we pay for everything Telkom-related, one would imagine they could have fibre linked every last corner of the country, including the townships, 5 times over and still made a healthy profit.
 
This is such bad news. Effectively it means once again SA will be stuck in the internet darkages. Wireless is not a replacement for fixed line imo, so now all my hopes of ONE day having a decent upload speed to go with a decent download speed is out the window. I won't be surprised if this is just another move on the part of Telkom to keep selling their even more expensive digicrap lines. I was hoping that with those rumoured 8meg lines would come an 1 meg upload speed, but noooo pride in what they do has never really been important to them.

Well in short this is then where any future hope ends. NeoTel is so besotted with wireless that clearly nothing will come from them. I guess now we wait for 2050 or something for a totally new way of connecting...hmm wait then I'm retired and it wont matter. Sigh...goes off looking for torch in the darkness.

This post made me lol :D

Well in Telkom's defence (ya i know...) take a look at their share price, its taken quite the beating over the last say... 6 months...

August 2008 they were trading at about R140/share and now they sitting 29% lower at about R99/share.

Im in the financial sector, and Im seeing a lot of local companies take a beating... only now really as its starting to trickle through to SA :(

So from that point of view I guess they not prepared to take any financial risks that would potentially put them at more risk... then we gonna have another SABC!!
