:DHellloooooooo....

First no I dont have 8Mbps........Today i had an interesting chat with a telkom technician, he came out to fix a fault on my land line, so he asked what line i have? , told him 4Mbit line, he asked hows the speed? I told him its excellent...
:D He then tells me that Telkom will be introducing 8Mbit lines   (that was my expression) I asked when will that be???? he said very soon and it might be first run as a trial to 4Mbit customers  at the same price

So just hoping to see when we see that:D

Telkom technician also came by my home the other day (3 months ago) and were full of promises about WiFi in the area... Still nothing

bull**** , hes talking **** , they cant give people decent 4mb now they want to give 8mb lines lmfao

Interesting. Would not be surprised if this were the case. Bump all the lines speeds up and have fastest being 8Mbit, but it's true that some people cannot even achieve 4meg speeds on their lines, so it is not going to help them much :(

Its going to be for a very select few that can enjoy this without issues...Telkom's infrastructure , with respect , lacks quality and reliability.

8192/640 sync rate is asking A LOT from Telkom - as they do not want to use optics to help customers with poor sync rates.

i've also received this info of 8mbit due soon.

If it ever does happen the people on 4096 will be getting f*****g good value for money cause already you are actually subscribed to 1024 but on trial as 4096, now could you imagine if your (permanent) trial spped doubles! Lucky basterds!

interesting to note. hellkom's creator also had a chat with a tekom technician back in 2002 when ADSL were first introduced and tested. He said they successfully tested to 8mb lines and it would probably cost around R200-R300 with no cap.

Telkom doesn't tell their technicians ****. And the technicians only assume what Telkom *thinks* and they're usually wrong. Communication problem with a communications company... you dont say?

Retarded if you ask me. I see no point in having such a big difference in speed between the top end product and the entry level and mid-range products. 512k subscribers have not seen a single speed increase since ADSL was introduced in this country, but 1meg subscribers get two?

Actually I 80% believe it

It all has to do with the cellphone companies introducing the 7.2 mbps lines, probably some time next year. And I think it is plainly for bragging rights, hence they call it a trial : Meaning that they are not really interested in rolling it out to everyone. It probably will remain a trial for many years. I am just happy I stay smack in the middle of Pretoria, so whatever people introduce, they try it on us first.

Who cares?

I get 2.8mbps from my 4mbps line because the copper cables here are fudged up.

Telkom says they probably won't fix it as it is too much of a job, so my whole area can't get that....

If they upgrade 4mbps to 8mbps I will be so angry, they should rather just introduce another package ffs! Cost effective wise, im getting screwed by Telkom with a giant purple dildo

2.8mbps while everyone else gets 8mbps?? Fudge that, I want to pay less for Telkom's utter laziness

giant purple dildos turn people on

I think telkom cornered the market and capitalized off of that

Wonder if the up to 8Mbps sync is tied into Telkom's other project to upgrade (larger) exchanges from ATM to Metro Ethernet backhaul.

Due to distance (& some quality) restrictions I would guess that a relatively small proportion of (Fastest) customers would be able to use 4-8Mbps. Still on the larger exchanges (> 5000 active ports) this additional capability could require a noticable increase in backhaul capacity which is not economically attractive to do via expensive ATM.

Very interesting stuff. I wouldn't mind a 8Mb line. :) This 1Mb(4Mb) used to be a trial, but it never changed from that status and I get 3.6-3.8 on speedtest. Perhaps what will happen for the slower connections is what happened to the old 192... they should just drop 384 now and make it 512, then drop all the 512 pricing down to match. Depends ofcourse how much profit they make on all the 512 packages.

I'm waiting for the day Telkom wakes up and goes "right, trial over". :P

I assisted with ADSL field trials around 2001 and we were able to achieve 8meg/sec quite easily although you had to be very close to the exchange. Telkom lines have always been capable, just depends how far away you are.

+1

ADSL speeds are determined, amongst other factors, by distance from exchange.

I think maximum is about 5km or something. Beyond that then no ADSL.

I think, to achieve 8mb/s, you need to stay within a couple hundred meters.
