350MB takes approx 13-14 minutes

Same here, but on my T3G account!

At 4Mb/s a 350MB file should take 11 Minutes and 16 seconds with 0% overhead so your 13-14 minutes seems spot on.

Nup -- they are normally bare brick buildings looking like jails or forts

Look for the wireless antennas and the microwave dishes on the roof.

( also watch for the Telkom vans going in and out -- like bees to a hive :D )

And here I was thinking ur calculations were fine, but u were on DC or screamer :erm:
 
Um... I download a 700mb movie in 30 mins, which equates to 1gb in 42 mins... on a 4mbps line.

Your line is not performing man!
 
Would the exchange be one of those blue Telkom box things you see on the side of the road, or is it a building in a sub-station sort of way?
Those blue boxes are called Street distribution cabnets.They are certainly not DSLAMS.They are merely a common point for Underground cable termination.
 
Traffic in general on a 4 MB line is throttled to 40kb / 50kb per second for a single download.

The only way I can get good throughput on an international site is if we use a program such as Grab++ which makes multiple connections to the same server and downloads many different portions at the same time. +- 10 Then we get 300 - 400kb per sec

Which would then be 1gb in about 41 min

Mega bits per second. If only more people understood that m isn't the same as M, b vs B etc.
 
In every industry there is terminology that those outside the industry tend to get wrong...

Communication is about others understanding you. If this is the case then I can see no harm done.

to be fair mbps and Mbps are far less ambigious in the SA context as opposed to kBps or kbps.

i can't think of anything a small m would correctly refer to. microbits?

If I say 384k. That is the line and I will download @ 40kbs.

There is no confusion here just the people that try to sound clever with their terminology. Its irrelevant!

Disagree cos what if I said I download at 48k what the hell does mean 48kb is way diff too 48KB

The problem is this windows mostly measures in KB/s not kb/s (which is what your line speed is measured in) and not everyone knows and understands this difference, which can have huge implication as to how resolve some members questions or helping the educated understand the problem

inthe last month there were a number of people complaining their 384kbps lines were only downloading at less than 40kB/s and wanting the extra 300 odd kB/s.

One individual that I recall. You also get people claiming that humans are having no effect on the global climate. There is unfortunately not much that can be done about stupid people! :D

µ = micro (millionth)... m for milli (thousandth)...

bits vs Bytes are much more important as it is impossible to divide a byte into thousands of pieces...:whistle:
