Ok.. so my area ADSL cables have been cut TWICE and now Telkom says that they will not re-install new lines. The problem is now it effects the whole area. Lynnrodene pretoria is the area name. I cant get ADSL OR even a land line to make calls. i have to use telkom mobile (8ta) 3G internet and its so fustrating...

anyone have any ideas of what i can do?

...same boat here in Brackenfell, Western Cape...cables were stolen 3 months ago...was 4 weeks in the dark then they actually decided to replace the stolen cables...2 months later (last week)...stolen again.

Not really much you (me) can do but hope somebody with a bit of brains realize that they CAN replace the cables...and while they're at it...SECURE the access point to the cables...PLENTY they can do to achieve that...build proper concrete housing around the manhole, place an alarm on the cable so that if it is cut/fiddled with armed responses are notified (btw this is done in some places but not all...)

yea.. it sucks hey... i cant believe Telkom is just closing the books on these cases.. theres no packages or reimbursements for loss, even for payment already made. They even asking me to pay for the 3 months i was left in the dark. They want me to pay them for the monthly internet subscription fee and line rental fees. Its just ridiculous.

I am in Tygerdal, Cape Town and have had no service since the 28th. I was told that we are down due to cable theft :(
Two weeks and they keep sending me SMS messages to let me know that they are working on it and that they will give me rebates.. I just want service. The kids are walking around like the walking dead because they have not been on Youtube for two weeks :mad::mad:
Maybe I am being ignorant here, but how long does it take to replace cables??

I mostly work from home and have had to actually go to the office or battle with Vodacom's 3G connection. My house is about 300M from the bloody tower but I can barely get 2 bars.
It feels like I am in freaking Malawi right now.. damn it!!

Oh didnt you know? This coutry is about the same level as malawi XD well... at least you got a rebate hey.. i got nothing in return but they still want me to pay for the Monthly contract for when i didnt even have cables :P Now they trying to use Legal documents to scare me as if they really going to take legal action... stupid stupid stupid (Sigh...)

What do you suggest Telkom do?

I suggest Telkom live up to their customer service / care standards that they promise. Secondly, they should stop being greedy in SA ADSL line rental Monopoly and give foreign companies a chance to invest for the wellness of this bloody country.

soooooo easy to "properly" secure the access point where the thugs steal the cables...they (Telkom) certainly has the resources...and once they realize that if they do the job properly to begin with, they won't have nearly as much cable theft as what they're currently experiencing...

Dude, copper cables cost a lot of money. Way lot than you think. I'm pretty sure that they had a long serious discussion about whether it is feasible to replace the stolen cables in your area. In the end, they have made a decision that the stolen cables will not be replaced in your high theft risk area. After all, Telkom doesn't want to risk paying a lot of money for the cables that keep getting stolen again and again from your area. It's a business decision whether you like it or not. Blame the government for not doing enough to prevent copper theft. Check out Afrihost 3G Internet. Heard it's awesome.

Nope i disagree. The area that i live in is RIGHT next to a very busy shopping mall "Glenfair" and the cables were on one of the main roads in Pretoria "Lynnwood Rd". This means that 1) Telkom was stupid so they hung the cables on polls (But obviously not high enought?) 2) They were stupid not to dig deep underground and plant them like they do in other areas. So what does this mean? Does this mean that our area can never have ADSL again? I dont even live in a high crime rate area but Telkom cant even manage a simple task.... they dont think... they dont understand the customers fustration. They put both of their hands up when a customer demands rebate. Telkom is just a government money making scam just like etolls. (Stupid, Greedy, and Money sucking which does affect the average consumer, it affects the low class people who dont have money)

Say what???? Anybody with a network license can built their own network.

How should they properly secure these access points?

We talking about ADSL LINE holders not ISP's... Yes, Anyone can make a network but the government is the sole provider for line rentals so they use telkom as their puppet for making money as a monopoly. This is not the first time this country has been so stupid in making these choices. SA has lost so much good opportunities due to the fact that the government wants to suck the people dry just before reaching critical point

Sorry, educate yourself before you dig your hole any deeper.

I hope you like the son of Telkoms CEO. unless you are also in on the corruption i have nothing more to say to your short little cute comments
Put on your big boy pants and debate the issue.

Why can no other licensed network operator build an ADSL LINE network?
