I hope your stupidity doesnt get the better side of you. Do you really think the average consumer can afford optic fibre internet? lol are you seriously kidding me? Please stop you nonsense XD

Nope i disagree. The area that i live in is RIGHT next to a very busy shopping mall "Glenfair" and the cables were on one of the main roads in Pretoria "Lynnwood Rd". This means that 1) Telkom was stupid so they hung the cables on polls (But obviously not high enought?) 2) They were stupid not to dig deep underground and plant them like they do in other areas. So what does this mean? Does this mean that our area can never have ADSL again? I dont even live in a high crime rate area but Telkom cant even manage a simple task.... they dont think... they dont understand the customers fustration. They put both of their hands up when a customer demands rebate. Telkom is just a government money making scam just like etolls. (Stupid, Greedy, and Money sucking which does affect the average consumer, it affects the low class people who dont have money)

It doesn't necessarily mean that the shopping mall and your house are on the same cable network. Yep, if Telkom informed you that they will not replace the stolen cables then you are pretty much screwed :(

Ooo the guy that registered 7 hours ago taking on the big guys, do I smell the shortest membership ever?

Come back after your 21st birthday

How should they properly secure these access points?

jirre I missed a fight...

anyways so to elaborate I actually spoke to the telkom "cable department"?? this afternoon and the guy there said (confirmed) that in my area that got hit last week, the lids at the access points were not even forced open...the guys had the right tools to quickly gain access...

So my suggestion was that for starters, the lids should be replaced (not sure how but hey...Telkom is a multi-billion rand organization...surely they can think of ways) by "tamper-proof" lids. You should also not be able to shovel your way to the cables, as I've seen some pics online that shows this is possible in some areas...concrete is your friend. ESPECIALLY in areas where there are cable thefts regularly, place an alarm on the cable. Don't have all the specifics about the alarm, but did read about it on some Telkom page over the weekend. Apparently one of the access points in my street is close to my house...I've even suggested (because I'm a nice guy) that I am willing to put up a camera if I have direct view of the access point/manhole...so this is just one suggestion how the public can assist with cable theft.

Where exactly are these lines that are getting stolen from? IE underground?

They do install secure manhole covers in high risk areas and it requires a special key and cover lifter to remove it.

Yeoville+explosion+-+manhole+cover

The majority of main cables (from the manhole back to the exchange) are "pressurised". If there is a drop in pressure then it triggers an alarm at the cable control centre.

There are also alarms on high risk routes (overhead and underground) that is triggered immediately if there's a voltage drop.

Here comes the problem....

Telkom outsourced these functions to private security companies. And I'm not going to say any more on an open forum other than that cable theft has not decreased!!

We talking about ADSL LINE holders not ISP's... Yes, Anyone can make a network but the government is the sole provider for line rentals so they use telkom as their puppet for making money as a monopoly. This is not the first time this country has been so stupid in making these choices. SA has lost so much good opportunities due to the fact that the government wants to suck the people dry just before reaching critical point

Any enterprise with the an iECNS licence can install DSL circuits and other copper infrastructure. Telkom has no monopoly in the ECNS sphere.

Yay, cables in my area getting fixed. I am told they will be able to fix everything by the 10th.. still sucks but what can you do?

The upside is that my kids got very innovative, improvised a lot and seem more happy without Youtube.
