I subscribe to Telkom Do Broadband Level 3. 4MB download.???

My number is 011 728... a main exchange. Performance is terrible and Telkom do not answer why. Just bought new Modem ( Telkom suggestion) TP-Link TD-W8960N.
Same lousy performance

Download 250 kbps (31.3 KB/sec Transfer Rate)

Upload 481kbps (60.1KB Sec)

Latency 253ms

How do you deal with Telkom ??

If that was a local server you're testing it's a congested exchange causing your problems

You know its bad when your upload speed is faster than your download speed.

I hear you can get your ports reset by telkom, did you try that? which number did you phone? 10210? Apparently 10210 is the number for everything at telkom.

You can't judge throughput issues without knowing your physical sync stats. What are your rates reported by your modem/router?Mainly the attenuation and SNR margin/ratio.

Port resets are only for auth/ppp layer issues. They do nothing to decrease loss and or noise problems on the copper pair.

What are your SNR and Attenuation Values?

Telkom ADSL Performance ?

What are your SNR and Attenuation Values?

Hi, thanks for feedback and anything else you may want to know.
SNR Margin (0.1 dB) Up 125 Down 130

Attenuation Rates (0.1dB) Up 510 Down 240

Thanks Bushbug

Assuming (0.1dB) scale? I'm reckoning 510 is 51.0dB, which puts ur copper at +-3.5KM long, giving u a max sync rate of 4736 if the SNR is 6dB. If the margin is at (0.1dB)? 125?, I'm assuming 12.5dB, which would put ur physical sync rate at around 1mbps. I could be wrong but these stats aren't very clear. What is the actual sync rate reported in your router?

Yea, those stats are way out for a 4 meg line, I think you would only run a 1meg line stably
I had a similar problem, I had 65.0db attenuation, 12.5 - 9-0 db snr, and even using a 384kb/s line, I never got speeds faster than 256kb/s (even though I was syncing at 384/128), after about a year of nagging telkom and mweb's tech department, in Jan my line went down for about 30min then came up with 25db attenuation, and 37db snr!, I would honestly say just keep bugging your ISP and telkom and they'll eventually fix it

Hi,

I am not sure how to get the Sync rate. The above was copied moments ago from STATS. page from TP-Link TD-W8960N. Please read the Down Stream and Up by reading labels over the 2 columns of Figures
Thanks Bushbug

You attenuation and SNR margin is fine for a 4Mb line.

Was the speed test you performed to a local or international server?

Please also do a tracert to www.cnn.com and post the results here.

Hi, thanks for helping. I am running Vista Home Premium 64. I have tried to find many searches on how to use tracenet, I can find guides for every system But Vista. It must be simple to run from a cmd command but I cant do it.
i did locate tracenet as a program dated 2006 . It does a quick 1 sec flash on screen in Dos Window mode.

Can you tell me what to do ?

Yes my Speed Test was done to various foreign Data Centres as that is my main use. There is little value to connecting to Telkoms local favorite server. Even then my Download Speeds are erratic varying from 500kbps to 2.8 MB with big fluctuations. Rebooted twice yesterday and today, just to have connectivity.

To do a tracert open a Command Prompt window by click on start then typing cmd

In the window that opens type tracert www.cnn.com

You can copy and paste from this window by right clicking and choosing mark then select the text by left clicking and dragging and right clicking again to copy.

Please do a local and international speed test one right after each other and post the results here as well.

Hi

Results:

Hi,
Sorry about this. Every time I try to Copy a paste using Mark as start point the image disappears on Copy Click.
I have a Screen Shot but it wont paste into this Forum and I have also tried moving it into Picasa and copying from there, again it wont Paste into Forum.

When I look at Insert Image it asks for a URL But Images are in ScreenHunter Folder and Picasa

Can I eMail or send by other means ??

It's normal for the mark to disappear when you right click, it automatically copies it.

So you right click->mark->right click again and it will have coppied it :)

TelkomInternet ISP has gone to the pits. My MWEB 1Mbit uncapped outperforms my Do3 10Mbit capped acc.

Brilliant- Thanks !!

Now this was using my old modem Mega 105WR from Telkom. I returned my new TP-Link Modem for checking as Wi-Fi was Max 12 Metres line of sight.

Hope this helps analysis
