Telkom ADSL pricing unpacked

Vodacom and MTN are also already upgrading their HSDPA networks to support downlink speeds of 7.2Mbps, significantly higher than Telkom’s fastest ADSL service.

telkom 4 mbps lines most ppl download at 4 mbps

when these cell companies say 7.2mbps i doubt u will get anywhere close to that

telkoms speed and quality is good if you ask me, never have any problems with adsl

its the price of bandwidth that sucks

You're right. One day they'll offer 100mbps and we'll still connect at gprs speeds.

Not that I like Telkom or anything, but anybody who realistically thinks that HSDPA competes with ADSL is smoking their socks. I've been using it for a year and speeds are very inconsistent. I used to have a 192 ADSL line and I'd much rather go back to that. ADSL really is the best value for money currently.

It depends, its major advantage is obviously mobility. I found HSDPA generally faster than my old 512k line, not as fast as my 4 meg sure but still not exactly slow. Its also probably a lot cheaper than a 4 meg line unless you're using more than 3GB.

The problem with Telkom is getting them to actually install your line. I've been waiting since December last year and I've now finally given up and I'm getting HSDPA. I haven't even gotten the phone line yet so if they installed that tomorrow it'd probably be another 3 months wait for ADSL.

Hopefully with Voda and MTN rolling out their own fibre and getting access to international bandwidth through SEACOM etc. they'll be able to just about bypass Telkom and drop their prices.

Vodacom's fiber rings in Joburg and Pretoria go live any day now... will make a nice difference to the 3G network.

Telkom will soon be bought out and the New Blood might "ruk em reg"... pull them into line.

Let's wait and see what happens (as we have been doing for so long now).

3G?.... My phone, which supports 3.5G, is useless at home.... the 3G coverage only starts about 2 houses up the road. I'm stuck on gprs if I need a data connection on my phone.... :(

Maybe someone should cut "President September's" 20Mb line for a month and give him a 384line.... maybe he will then realise just how wonderful the service is on our side of the gravy train.

No, leave his 20mb line just give him a 3gb cap.

Look into getting a booster antenna from poynting.co.za

They really make a difference... and are not hugely expensive.

Let's be honest here - Neotel's 1000 on-net minutes are basically worthless and will be for some significant time. Whereas Telkom's Closer packages can actually save you a small fortune on local and long distance calls. You need to take this value into account when comparing a R499 offering from Neotel to the R800 odd package from Telkom. Also, a DSL modem is cheaper to buy and infinitely more useful (wifi, ethernet) and configurable than the Neotel unit and there is no 24 month contract.

Until Neotel has a larger customer base, there is no reason to lower prices significantly. Give it time.

I speak for many people when i say I'm very happy with Telkom's DSL and phone service. I've never had a problem and I've never had to strain to hear the glitchy, incomprehensible voice over a wireless interface (i'm looking at you MTN).. You'll have to pry my copper out of my cold, dead hands. I know some people are not as lucky as me to be in a dense urban area.

Hopefully, per Gig prices will decrease significantly next year when the new cables are put into service.

same old shyte

Ruben September will not make any drastic changes to telkoms business model. he will maintain the status quo as far as possible cause there are hungry mouths to feed and im not talkin bout his children. Aint it funny how they can praise themselves without blinking. There must be a lot of idiots under one roof at Telkom. No vision for the future and a lack of sustainable business practices will lead to a TELKOM FIRE SALE! IT HAS ALREADY BEGUN!

Gaz, can i safely assume you do not work in the telecoms business? Telkom service etc is of another world.

I can think of at least 100 business in theWest Rand that can not get ANY service from Telkom due to "lack of budget" or one of my favourites, "due to theft, Telkom will not be laying more copper".

makes one wonder doesnt it?

Is the management of Telkom really THAT ignorant? Do they think that Bullsh*%t baffles brains? I am only waiting for Neotel to offer their services in my area, then it's "goodbye and good ridance Telkom!"

Because of September's anouncement, I moved to SAOL, just to spite them, hoop nie ek het myself gespite nie

Telkom, however, said that it was reducing the local loop length to the customer with initiatives such as fibre-to-the-node, something which places speeds of 10Mbps “in sight”.

Sounds great but it does not stop them from taking more than a year to provide a fixed line in Pta. No WiMax available either.

How about fixing the uselessness first.

Yes you are safe!

Let me ask you a question. Let's say you sell oranges. If it costs you R250 000 a month to buy a new truck to deliver oranges to the West Rand because it gets hijacked every month, would you want to sell oranges in the West Rand? Same story with cable theft - it isn't financially viable. It's a Billion Rand loss every year as reported in the news media.

I said i was lucky to be in a good service area and the topic is the value of the packages, not copper theft.

Come on people - show me a cheaper package - 4mb line - there is none !!! Yeah right vodacom and mtn et al brag about faster speed but do they deliver ? You all b*tch and moan, but at the end, you prefer your fix line adsl soon to be upgraded to 8mb !!!
