Telkom eSIM launch date revealed

Telkom has revealed it will launch eSIM support for smartphones on its network next month.

“We will officially launch eSIM support for handsets during the month of August 2021,” the operator told MyBroadband.
 
I just want VoLTE to be activated, but this seems to be too difficult.
Hope their call center understands what eSIM's are.

What's the big deal about VoLTE? Some folks on here seem to place a high level of importance on it, my rudimentary understanding of it doesn't understand why?

At this time I already lost hope with them due to terrible/non-existent data over December (luckily fibre went live about a month after this screenshot):

The best one can hope for now is a reasonably priced data contract for data on eSIM + SIM phones.

CellC eSim has been really good I have just about moved all my calling them them R99 for 250 minutes or R199 for 900 any network minutes. Also their data for 180/6 Months or 12 months upfront is rather amazing.

Doing it with my Vodacom contract sim in the slot, sister who’s an Advocate and calls a lot has also moved to it now and is enjoying it, but was really worried about cell reception. If you have no CellC reception then it literally jumps to MTN.

Lets hope they offer it via digital channels and not only physical like CellC
 
Great! So now it is MTN, Cell C and TK doing e-SIM.
Obviously Vodacom will fight to the death to prevent it being implemented.

MTN and Telkom works reasonably well on my iPhone, best of both.

Would be great if Vodacom could also join the party with esim support for Smart Phones. Some days they really are useless to say the least.

It runs over LTE and is basically SIP, so everything is IP.

How much of an improvement is there though? If you get crappy reception, I doubt you are going to get a good enough data connection to improve the call noticeably because you are in crappy coverage overall.

This I could see being the business considering the different data sources the WiFi could come from.

Reception is always part of the equation, together with attenuation and sources of interference.
Generally, if you have good reception, it will be more clear than traditional voice.

Is it fair to say the benefit of VoLTE is somewhat overstated?
 
I don't see any advantage for e-SIM over dual SIM. E-SIM seems to be an extremely expensive solution to a problem that was solved years ago...
