Telkom eSIM support launching in August

Is it fair to say the benefit of VoLTE is somewhat overstated?
No, it is worth it. MNOs won't spend money on technology that brings only marginal improvements.
Many European operators are switching off 3G in order to use the spectrum for LTE/5G.

A big benefit for myself especially on Vodacom’s poorly optimised network was that using VoLTE would take away the need for the network to switch back to 3G before your phone could ring.

On VC many instances instead of switching to 3G it would simply send the caller to voicemail instead:mad:

So when you travel you may still have a problem if the country you visit has no eSIM equipped service providers. How easy is it to change eSIMs?

Simply slide the physical sim in if the country you are travelling in has no e-SIM support.
MTN sent a QR code via email with my SIM.

if all the networks in SA can support e-SIM that would make it even better since you can then Roam on the SA network with e-SIM and pop a local sim card in for cheaper data at the same time. Once again best of both worlds while abroad.

Any updates on if/when Telkom will launch esim? The month of August is nearly over.

Probably on the last day

Might switch to them, this cellc one works on my nerfs as when it looses single I have to switch to 2g and switch to lte. Connect flexi data disabled if don't manually to switch to 2g and back to 4g

Next challenge: where to get a decentish phone that supports two eSIMs?

My current device has a physical Telkom SIM and an eSIM for a North American network. Would be nifty to have both as eSIMs.

What happens when scan another esim? I have the option but don't have another to scan. This is on s20

I need an eSIM solution for when I get my apple watch next month

How much of an improvement is there though? If you get crappy reception, I doubt you are going to get a good enough data connection to improve the call noticeably because you are in crappy coverage overall.

This I could see being the business considering the different data sources the WiFi could come from.
Generally due to better spectrum efficiency, moving to VoLTE will mean Telkom can reduce spectrum for 2/3G and give it to LTE/5G, so more efficient use of spectrum.
Another bonus is that you phone doesn't swap from LTE to HSPA (3G) for a call, say that you're using a WiFi hotspot during load shedding and someone calls you or you get an SMS, everything connected to it will still be the full speed.
Generally a VoLTE call will also have better voice quality if at the edge of signal due to how it's encoded, but that's a whole different topic since then latency comes into play.

I appreciate the information.

According to all the News hype, they launched yesterday, but seems they forgot to tell any of their staff in the Call Centres and in their stores....
