Telkom fixed lines drop by 110 000

You mean government members. Sorry to say but Merc prices will be going up and to afford such things one has to make the money somewhere.

R50bn revenue... there's enough in there to sacrifice a bit to improve service and keep current customers and make new offerings to sign up more customers.

I for one cannot switch to a wireless solution. The area I live in sux for even cell signal, so I'm gonna be one of those 2 remaining customers someday. If I had to switch to another provider, I'd want it to be fixed line too.

You can make R2m by selling 2 of a product for R1m each, or 1 million of a product at R2 each... only one scenario will result in repeat and/or increased business. Something this stupid government does not understand. Clearly Telkom has taken the failed scenario, so not surprising that they are having line cancellations. Quite clear that our happy government is not out to support its citizens but to simply rape them for all they are worth. I think the major shareholders in Telkom are probably not even SA citizens, so probably to them they don't give a crap about how much we suffer for "essentials" such as internet connectivity and telecoms costs ... they all in a country where stuff like that is cheap.

We can all complain about it, but in effect there's nothing we can do about any of it. Just have to sit and wait for other providers to start offering services that make sense and actually perform.

In a normal free market system prices should drop as demand goes down.. but no not in good old SA!
 
customers lost but their maintenance costs stay the same, fixed line has fixed cost, the more people you have the better, this is typical spreadsheet management at work, the only thing is it does nothing for the people and is damaging a national asset
 
I think Telkom are embracing the idea that in a lot of companies 20% of you clients make up 80% of your business. I think Telkom are trying to trim the fat. Focus on the 20%, probably businesses and bugger the rest.
 
Maybe they should repair my fault which has left me phone/dsl-less for 4 months now? I'd bet at least 20% of that decline in subscribers is due to in some way or another a fault which wasn't resolved, like mine.

Then again the main reason there's no growth in the fixed line market is that the line rental's so high.

Realistically, I think it would be 110 000 plus at least 50-70% of the number of DSL customers there are.

Plenty. Cable theft is a massive problem. In many cases Telkom has no plans to reinstall stolen copper cables in certain areas (eg, parts of Midrand).

Since 2001 the number of fixed lines has been steadily declining in South Africa. Loosing another 100 000 lines in the year to date is cause for concern as the stats will show the rate of disconnection from the network is speeding up again (after slowing down a bit in the 2005 AR).
 
Does anybody know what type of Cable they normally steal? How many isolated copper wires in each cable? How thick is each? I am so desperate for my phone back that I plan to go wire in my own cable. It's 95m long that was stolen. Anyone know what the legal implications would be if I were to do this?
As it is Telkom were supposed to be crediting me for the downtime on my line, but I received a nice hefty bill for the third month of downtime now which I have obviously not paid for. If they're going to be be charging me for a service they're under contract to deliver to me which I am not getting, then surely they can't do anything to me if I interfere with their infrastructure to try get that service working? This is how desperate I am !
 
Telkom once a shark allways a shark, can't wait for Neotel to get to country towns..
