Telkom Internet Uncapped User Feedback.

Hi is there someone who can help me to move my line to another place, i`m trying to call telkom but the call centre is so busy, please

Looks as though TI might have created a retentions department possibly doing exit interviews, let us know how it goes.
Will do.
Must say I'm actually feeling sad that it came to this. Have been with Telkom forever and was happy with the service.

Funny enough the one other problem I had was also this time last year, just before I moved to uncapped and that took ICASA intervention to fix.

Any other place I can retrieve my DSL Username and password? I use to have it on SMS but my phone has lost all data.

Tried to call call center, after about 2 hours still nobody answering. Sent multiple twitter messages with no response, complained on Facebook but no response.

Seriously can a simple task like this be so difficult to accomplish!!!!

Reason I don't have them in my modem? I used another ISP (vox) while telkom had all this connection problems.

If you have the same problem - go here https://online.telkomsa.net/pmt/PmtServlet

Well, the problem on this traceroute is that hops 5,6,7,8 and 9 are all on IPNet. If we had a problem, it would have shown up on hop 3 or hop 5.

So, either there is a problem between nbsc-ip-bssr-2 and nbsc-ip-rcache-1, or there happened to be a latency spike when traceroute was sending packets with a ttl of 9, that coincided.

And this is why mtr or winmtr is better, as it traces the path, and then pings all the hops on the path and provides stats on each hop.

And yes, it is possible for your DSLAM to be horribly congested for 1 minute, and then be fine after that.

We are seeing high utilisation (still within limits, but getting quite close) on one IPC link, in Cape Town, and you didn't go through it.

Ok. Here you go...

Know how you feel, I had the same experience with axxess during the 2012 MNET meltdown. Because of business commitments I was forced to kick their uncapped accounts into touch within 2 weeks (kept the capped a/cs though).

They're still a great company to deal with and I believe their uncapped problems are behind them now :)

Connection just went to crap from 13:10.

Erratic like crazy one minute speed is OK the next minute packet loss and timeouts

Backup account (capped)

Not sure why I get the high reading on International. Usually it is 3.2Mbps

My real world performance today has been excellent though. HTTP downloads have been flying, streaming has been a pleasure.

I haven't tried torrents because I only torrent after 12AM.

Internet just went down.Been holding on for 30 minutes trying to cancel with Telkom.

This is the same feeling I had since leaving MWEB, customer since big black box days. They were pioneers of "free the web" which was all about getting LLU, scrapping softcaps, and pushing for uncapped DSL. Then they about turn with the latest AUP update. I felt robbed and cheated.

Hi Ranger, is this the sort of thing you are discussing?

My 1st post on my broadband. Post virgin I am ;-)

I have really appreciated the Telkom uncapped forum feedback, as I have read through most responses from early January 2014.

As a capped AfriHost user for the last few years I have been extremely happy with the service they deliver. My main use is streaming - lots of internet radio and YouTube, iPlayer, with the odd bit of browsing here and there. I don't have TV at home, so when I want to watch something it had better work, without buffering and such annoyances. As the cap is always a concern I decided to move over to TI with the promise of the all-you-can-eat buffet, perhaps I can convince myself to a NetFlix subscription too. At 4Mb/s, no local line issues, and a very good AH experience I moved over in the middle of Jan.

Oh boy. Immediately, yes that same hour, after configuring my router to run on TI the whole Internet experience took a turn for the worse. Pages seemed to load a little bit slower, but I could forgive that, BUT, streaming just was plain terrible, unusable - who watches at 144p these days? The internet radio, which uses such a small amount of bandwidth also farted, burped, died, restarted, repeat recipe.

Granted, in the middle of the month TI was having problems, as was mentioned throughout this forum at length. Over the last 2 weeks+, I failed to see a radical improvement of TI's service - despite the fixes they have done. Yes, at times streaming would work, but majority of nights around 6-10PM it would be pretty much unusable - unless if you want to watch something that buffers continuously - and after 10PM I like to sleep....

Disappointment is not the best word I can come up with. The gamers also seem to be feeling the same pain - it's all a little too inconsistent - it works in the morning, then it does not work in the afternoon or evening. I see so many posts of ping times, expectations and disappointments.

In my opinion this all boils down to one culprit - congestion on TI that is not being resolved. I don't know if its international congestion or local, frankly I don't care - I just expect the internet to work.

What is the definition of an adequate internet service in Telkom Internet's view? Is it the fact that I can browse static web pages? Yes, that's easy. Does it extend to being able to stream at least @ 360p without buffering? In TI's mind, I don't think so. Does it extend to decent speeds and response times for gamers? I also don't think so.

See, TI, the internet has shifted from an overly controlled static medium to a dynamic animal that cannot be entirely tamed.

Perhaps before January TI did not have the customer load...or perhaps something else happened as they now have to be a fair playing/paying partner in terms of competition law, I don't know. But something changed, and there is no move, no will, and certainly no public communication to set the record straight......if they have changed the rules of engagement, then at lease communicate such e.g. we are shaping and prioritizing to hell and gone....

I looked at BT's internet propositions on the weekend, and they indicate in their marketing material that they don't shape or control - and they openly cater for streaming services to be run on their network.

I tried calling 10210 - how frustrating as those folks only can help if you have a local line issue....and are pretty lost with any issue beyond your local exchange.

So, over the weekend, I reverted back to AfriHost capped. I was almost secretly hoping that the congestion issues would persist. Did they? NO. It felt as if all of a sudden, YouTube was able to catch its breath as it streamed. You know that streaming is going well when that grey download line gets well ahead of the playback pace. And the overall Internet experience is again quick. At any time of the day.

Oh dear. Well I suppose 20Gb capped will give me about 2 hours of viewing per night - any more than that and I am watching too much stream content anyway for a balanced life ;-) For the R89/mo spent it is certainly worth not having the frustration and to be able to use the internet without congestion. And, this may seem crazy, but it is a hassle to cancel TI, so for the moment I keep my TI account going in the belief that perhaps things will improve someday... I will keep tracking the forum from time to time to see if that is the case.

I feel nothing for any of the ISPs. They are companies taking my money and all I ask is they deliver what I have paid for. I dumped Mweb when they launched their AUP and I did not even get a chance to figure out if Telkom Internet were any good. A month after joining they collapsed. Put up with four weeks of lame brain excuses and denials but when they "Identified the problem" and two weeks later they still had not fixed it I bailed. Have to spend the next month with them but I am already with a new ISP and reset my modem to them. Seriously the performance is like the difference between chalk and cheese. I will not even bother logging into my Telkom account again.

Welcome, if last Febuary/March are anything to go by this too will pass :)

... although I won't be surprised to see a new type of TI uncapped account specifically for Netflix & VOD released before the end of March.

Netflix buzzing smoothly at highest PC quality setting (3MB/s) :D. Will try SuperHD later on the console.

After a crazy weekend , i look forward to catching up on some lost TV time :). Thanks ranger and team.

If they launch such an uncapped account with specific "guarantees" for VOD and other services I will certainly consider.
