My 4mbps uncapped line is acting up again.

When using speedtest.net or downloading via HTTP everything is fine, and I get 400KBps+ speeds. But when downloading torrents, with loads of seeders, I get 5 - 30KBps. Does Telkom seriously throttle this much at the beginning of the month?

I got full line speed earlier today. Well almost full, about 400KB/s

Very happy with Telkom Internet. I think it was just slow because I got the line yesterday, but last night and this morning great speeds! It does not lag like AH, and my pages opens instantaneously. Happy.

I'm still not happy with my latency, its still 130ms+ to cape town. I have had my port recreated twice. Will do some more tests when I get home tonight.

In the mean time...

Telkom 2MB Uncapped :( I never had problems when I was on capped account.
Yeah that is definately not right. I'm further away from Cape Town than you.
Which method or site did you use to test?
with pingtest,net, mine shows 21ms.
With MyBBspeedtest its shows 60ms, but I think it might go to Rosebank
With SAIX.net it is 37ms and 54ms to Rose Bank

Do a traceroute to Cape Town: tracert capetown.spdtst.saix.net

Maybe Ranger can give feedback for you?

This is my result from Kirkwood on 4Mbps line

I'm in the western suburbs, Linton Grange exchange, here's my results on TI 4Mb uncapped with torrents running in the background but limited to 220kB/s:

speedtest_net.png

I'm guessing your problem isn't due to your TI uncapped account and you should look elsewhere for the cause.

Edit: torrents finished, just normal server traffic

There is a problem on one of the content acceleration devices (starting yesterday at 17h00, 42 minutes before your post), and due to the way the traffic management system works, this problem has resulted in us being unable to use about 10% of our capacity in Cape Town.

We are working on resolving this, it should be fixed within 10 minutes. If we cannot resolve within the next hour we will implement a workaround to re-allocate the 10% of traffic we cannot currently use.

Peer-to-peer traffic has lower priority than other traffic, and so is impacted more than HTTP in your case.

Due to vendor resources being on leave, this took a bit longer than expected, but it should now be resolved (as of about 11h50)

Test conducted on 02 April 2013 07:40:01 PM

Download Speed: 952 kbps (119 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 680 kbps (85 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 430 ms

On a 10mb line. I am scared now because I signed a 24 month contract, and the speeds are much worse than I ever experienced at AH. I can't open webpages / watch youtube or anything :( Telkom say there is no problem!

You signed what? Eish will never do that considering how much can change in that time frame...

Is it possible to cancel the contract and just pay for the modem cash?

Maybe ask Rangr or some of the guys a bit of advice regarding your line stats, but if you would like to move that direction.

http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=490264

Not a lot of info, but maybe you could look at that option?

As everybody says, it would be beter not to be locked in to a contract, even if you stay with the current ISP.

Happy to say everything is back to normal today :) I think I was being shaped or throttled. I did phone Telkom Internet support and they said after 125Gb that I was going to be severely throttled? Maybe they took a while to reset for the new month?..
Just happy to report all is back to normal.

No. You pay a penalty fee based on how many months are left in your contract. Or at least that is what happened in my case :)

No, you weren't.

I did phone Telkom Internet support and they said after 125Gb that I was going to be severely throttled? Maybe they took a while to reset for the new month?..

That information doesn't seem accurate.

There is no delay in 'resetting' anything.

Just happy to report all is back to normal.

Here is my traceroute:

A traceroute while you are experiencing problems would assist to some extent in identifying the problem.

There was no congestion in our Cape Town site in the past 20 hours (since this).

I'm suspecting exchange congestion. Please PM me your username.

I switched to Telkom's 4MB uncapped service a month ago, and am very happy. As my line syncs at 10Mbps, I'd like to upgrade to the 10MB uncapped service, so I tried to do it by 'ordering' it via the website (I REALLY want to avoid the call-centre if at all possible - while the product performs well, the same cannot be said for the call-centre) but I get the following error when clicking the ORDER button found at http://www.do.co.za/broadband/offerings/telkom-internet-plans/uncapped/do-uncapped-up-to-10mbps/:

500 Internal Server Error

Servlet error: An exception occurred. The current application deployment descriptors do not allow for including it in this response. Please consult the application log for details.

Is there any other way I can get my package upgraded?

Hi guys, im not sure what the problem is so here goes....

I was with mweb on the 4mb uncapped account and it was stable. My downloads and or speedtests would go upto 7mbps every now and then and this was because im on a 10mb exchange. Last month I closed my mweb account and this past monday my mweb account was closed so I logged on via my afrihost and fnbconnect accounts and both was working fine. so I called Telkom and got me a 10mb uncapped account and all of a sudden my torrent speed was down and when I did speed tests I got ping around 200ms and download was 50mbps and upload was just as bad. So I called the telkom help desk and asked them what account they put me on and the guy says they put my on a 4mb uncapped account. I then told the guy that was not the account I requested to be on so please put me on the 10mb account and so he did. The I turned off my modem waited a few minutes and then switched on the modem and noticed and my torrents was still down. Then I ran a speed test and I got strange results like ping 400ms and then download 5mb and upload 0.5mb.:wtf: ran another test and ping was 17 download 1mb and upload 0.2mbps:confused:

So I know that it wasnt the isp because I just checked it out before I called telkom and it was fine on afrihost and fnbconnect. so I ran a test of fnbconnect and low and behold i was getting the same result. I dont think its an ISP problem. Yesterday I came home and my torrents was still not running right so ran a speed test and worked ok then ran a few youtube vids in hd and was running smoothly and then boom started buffering... so ran another speed test and again same thing. I think it could be a problem with my line but not sure.... so what do you think the problem could be? any idea's? do you think I should reinstall window's?

1) Hi guys, im not sure what the problem is so here goes....

2) do you think I should reinstall window's?

1) Exchange congestion possibly (some CT exchanges seem to have problems), maybe someone piggy-backing on your bandwidth - is your WiFi secure?

2) No, I'd be very surprised if it's a windows problem from your description.
