Telkom Internet Uncapped User Feedback.

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong...

I hinted at that (well, what those who want to download the most migjt be doing wrong) a day or two ago, but it got lost in between all the reports of bad experience.

So you're suggesting it's me? Sign up for TI 4 meg uncapped on Monday, use it for a day or so, then my evening internet goes wacked for 3 nights in a row?

Am I right in saying that I am managed/ throttled because I use my line actively?

No.

We don't currently 'actively manage' (e.g. via short rolling windows) users. We are considering other options to reducing the impact of abusive customers on the experience of the others, and short rolling windows will probably be considered.

So you're suggesting it's me?

No.

You asked what changes every day between 4 and 11, seemingly implying that "Telkom's incompetent technicians" do random experiments every evening.

I replied that there are (usually) no changes at those times, but that the customer behaviour is different from around 16h00 (based on the stats we see) to 22h00, creating more demand than during business hours.

(Due to the fact that there have been reports of bad experience over the past few days - both here, as well as reports from the call centre etc. - we implemented changes at 18h00 to try and improve the experience. This was due to having seen something that didn't look right yesterday afternoon, and not wanting to subject everyone to the same experience longer by waiting until after midnight to implement changes. This definitely helped for the Gauteng site. We typically do changes between 01h00 and 05h00).

There are people on this forum/thread who download 24x7, and I was implying that users who do that might want to consider not doing that. It's bad for the rest of the users, and they will download more if they don't download 24x7. This is one of the changes that has been made to try and influence user behaviour so that we even out the bandwidth demand a bit more, but it has not been announced officially yet (will shortly).

Reviewing some things now for last night, since we made the last changes for the Cape Town site at 22h00, there shouldn't have been any problems at all with local traffic (international looks mostly ok, but there is one anomaly I will investigate today).

If you did have problems after 22h00, I don't think it is us ...

I simply asked what is changing - I certainly didn't mean to imply anything about telkoms technicians. Ranger, perhaps we got off on the wrong foot... Sorry.

I just got here (to TI and this thread) on Monday, and I see a definite pattern with "the internet" failing for a lot of TI users in the evenings. I realise it's a complex business, but I accept that changes to fix the situation have been made.

I thank you for the feedback, and will see how things go in the next few days.

Many thanks for that clear explanation - even I understood it :)
Here's hoping things sort themselves out over the weekend!

I have never been in the red zone and I hit orange for the first time last month (school holidays !!). I do not let the kids leave their computers on 24x7 but most of the downloads are Steam and Origin games that the kids are downloading. The file sizes are huge and I wonder how much of the 24x7 bandwidth used are legal game downloads.

Perhaps TI needs to look at local servers (proxies!!) that would alleviate this...

You do manage customers. I was managed last month after reaching +-115GB. Speed was halfed for the rest of the month. Not happy with it, but I suppose its better than being screwed over like MWEB does to its clients.

It is selfish for me to download 24/7? My opinion is that I am paying for a service. How I use that service is my business. And until other people start helping me to pay for the service, I will not consider anybody else.

Same reason why I dont switch off a thing in my house during peak electricity times. I am paying for it.

what account do you have?

My observations for the morning of 16/08/2013
4Mbps uncapped.

Capture.PNG

Browsing and streaming of radio services was okay for the morning.
Towards afternoon 420p videos had a couple of hiccups and browsing slowed down and started with slow loading of pages.
Facebook pages would struggle to update while scrolling down for older pages.
MyBB pages have spinning circle in the tab area for 45 - 60 seconds with a "sending request" at the bottom of the page.
I mostly worked on SA hosted web pages and they really slowed down.

Speedtests shows 500 - 600kbps lower than I'm used to getting

Speedstest show 1100kbps lower than I'm used to.

What is changing at TI between 4-ish in the afternoon and 11-ish at night?

Customer behaviour. Nothing else changes.

I replied that there are (usually) no changes at those times, but that the customer behaviour is different from around 16h00 (based on the stats we see) to 22h00, creating more demand than during business hours.

Is this relevant to this discussion?

Demand seems to tail off as the business day is ending, stabilising at around 5 o'clock, then dropping a lot after 10 pm.

Evening usage seems to be roughly half that of peak times of the day.

I'm trying to get my head around all of this, that's all - not shoot anyone down... :)

Edit: I realise this is ALL traffic through CINX and JINX from all ISP's, so it may not necessarily be a good indicator of TI isp traffic.
