Okay, so my current ISP is Telkom and have a 4mb/s, 20GB+20GB capped account. I specifically chose a capped account because I wanted speed and no throttling. Everything was hunky-dory until about 4 months ago when my speed started fluctuating. It started small, but gradually got worse, until it became near impossible to surf the web at all. I struggled to even download a YouTube video, which would start off at 250kb/s (which was already low), and would gradually slow to a stop after about a minute. After quite a few fault logs, and faults being closed without resolutions, and arguments (can you believe that at one point I was advised to downgrade? To what!? They just couldn't understand that there was a problem), eventually a supervisor told me that the exchange in my area is congested and that they would need to upgrade it. Fine, I understand.
Amazingly, it seemed like they did just that a month later (about a month ago). So, it stopped fluctuating so wildly, but not entirely - at least our frustration when surfing has been reduced to keeping our hair in.

BUT THEN came a free sign up to Afrihost with a cap of 1GB package, and uncapped from 12-6am, which I can now switch between the two ISP's anytime I want. O.M.G. - the speed! and the STABILITY!! My YouTube downloads run at +550kb/s with Afrihost - constantly!!!

That means that there IS NO congestion, and that the problem is solely with TELKOM as ISP.

Can someone worthwhile please be employed there??? Oh wait - they fired all the experienced engineers.

Telkom won't be my ISP for much longer.

Please post some details, or PM them to me.

For example, we placed IPC orders with Wholesale / Openserve in March or April which wee only completed on 10 Dec (some regions completed before others).

Telkom is a trash ISP, there are literally only 4 proper ISP's in SA.

My Telkom account runs just as fine as my Afrihost and Vox accounts, no problems.

I have a 10Mbps capped account with both ISP’s and they run at almost identical speeds.

@Dan C, @LaraC - that's great that you're not experiencing my problem - yet.

As I said, it wasn't always like this, which is why it IS a problem, which was confirmed by the line technicians that inspected my line and had attempted to escalate the problem, as they said the problem is on the side of the ISP, who don't seem to recognise that there is a problem on their side and refer back to the line technician. And as I can prove using my Afrihost account, the line technician is right. Bottom line, the current people at Telkom hasn't a clue on how to fix it. So, I hope that you never have a problem - because it won't be fixed.

@ranger, I'll PM some screenshots. thanks

Oh, and, that means they spent money on upgrading an exchange that didn't need upgrading. But, that just seems to be the norm these days...

All ISP's have their up & downs and Afrihost have only just emerged from a rather toxic period, I suggest you check some of the ISP threads here before coming in guns blazing.

Hi

You can always use the Test Account from Telkom. It will not logon to any other sites. But use the http://saix.net for a speed test.
Login: guest@telkomadsl
Password: guest

This will highlight if there is a problem with your account or the line.
