Telkom Mobile LTE Speedtest Results
Recently, over the past 4 weeks, my speeds are not what they used to be. Getting a full 5 bars but can't seem to manage anything more than 35mbps. I used to get anywhere between 50-80mbps. There was a recent firmware update and that reset my APN to the TelkomSA profile with "internet" set as my APN. I reset to my settings which had "TelkomInternet" as my APN and network mode set to 2300Mhz 4G Only. Speeds are still almost half what they used to be. Not sure if it maybe due to more and more people jumping onto LTE. Dunno whether logging a fault is worthwhile.

20-30mbit down / up. Nothing to hold your breath about but.. it's not bad. I mean. Thats double what most ADSL lines are.

Recently found out that my area is covered by LTE-A network. Which router can I use to tap into this LTE-A network. Currently using Huawei B315 router and it not compatible for LTE-A. if I happen to get compatible router, will it be possible to access the LTE-A with the normal package of Smart Broadband Wireless. Please help.
Yes you will. LTE-A is a hardware requirement and is available to everyone on telkom.
Currently there is only one router available in SA that supports Telkom LTE-A and it's the B618s-65d. It's only available at Telkom and retails for R2799 cash or + R50p/m to any contract upgrade or new contract

Thanks for your reply. Does this mean the Afrihost/Axxess B618 LTE-A routers are not compatible? What a miss.
Yes unfortunately they are not. They will work for LTE-A on Cellc, MTN and Vodacom's down network but just work on normal LTE on band 3 with Telkom. No band 40 or LTE-A on Telkom.
I will gladly take over anyone's LTE package if they want to do something else and LTE is no longer for you. I've been using someone else's uncapped LTE but they cancelled due to immigrating. So I need another uncapped LTE package. I cant apply for one because my address does not fall in the coverage area. Someone else with a running LTE package, let me know, I need one urgently.

I might get one if I knew for a fact that it was going to make a substantial difference to my current average of around 30mbps.
Is there any guarantee that I would enjoy substantially higher download speeds [50mbps, for example] with a 618 65d? I would rather not pay that amount of money only to find that the increase in performance is underwhelming.
There will be no way to know. LTE-A is basically just combining two 2300MHz frequency signal into one connection. If you get 30Mbps from the one and lets say the second signal is peaking @ 2Mbps a LTE-A would mean a mere 2Mbps speed increase. So it's a lotto or you need to test with a phone or get a loan unit or something.
I do agree that R2799 is a bit pricey but for me it was worth every cent pushing my peaks to 115Mbps.
Also in the same boat. Deciding if i should get the B618. Speeds have been terrible lately. Only getting 15mb during the day and then at night at 7pm it drops to like 2mb. Not too sure if the Router will help. Maybe will put the sim in my phone and see what speeds i get
