So Telkom Mobile allows you a MAX of 10 sims that you are allowed to register on your ID number.

Its sounds like a lot but its not really that much hey. I have 3 sims that I have in a tablet and modem and mifi. 1 I use in my phone that is on sim sonke and a couple of old ones I ditched when sim sonke was released and those I ditched for prepaid internet staterpacks that can have data and sim sonke.

Now seems I am not allowed to rica any more sims on my ID number cause I have reached the 10 sims limit.

I don't use the old ones but its a mission to remove them from my name. Telkom Mobile store seems clueless and say they need to escalate it. SIGH Telkom Mobile always makes it so hard with everything. :(

I would rather have 2 or 3 sims that I rote in my mifi than buying bundles cause the R49 staterpack is way cheaper than their on net bundles.

R147 will give me 7.2GB with 3 sims over 12 months which is good enough for my mifi. The R149 2 +1 Data deal is great but only valid for 2 months and then it expires. With the sims you get the 200mb data every month.
R38 for a 250mb TM data bundle. The sim data is better than that.

Hi cavedog

As advised on the PM, we have sent your request to RICA Registration Department to assist and we will provide feedback as soon as we receive it.

Just a update on this as a warning to any other people out there that might expirience the same problem in the future.

Telkom Mobile/8ta DOES NOT recycle numbers. This might change but since launch they have not recycled numbers*

I tried out 8ta back when they lauched. It was nice but yeah I moved on cause they was just roaming MTN that time. I threw the sim in the bin. So then they they had their own network and started with the specials and I used it again. I bought some phones from edgars on telkom mobile too.

So when sim sonke was launched it was epic and had to get the sim but since there are 2 sims inside they both got ricad. Then it was telkom mobile coverage only. Then they opened it up to roaming too.

I bought a sim and kept it in a extra phone. Then they launched the prepaid internet staterpack. So I bought 2.

So if I counted all the numbers I had since 8ta was launched activated 10 or so sims. That is the limit of sims you can register on your id number.

Telkom mobile rep helped me remove it from my name the old unusused sims that still worked till today. Now a shocking flaw in their system. These numbers will stay on my id number FOR LIFE. They are just cancelled and are greyed out on the system but I am not allowed to rica a sim on my name EVER again. They stay greyed out on your id number even if you ported the number out to another network.

Now Telkom Mobile rep was really cool but nothing can be done about this problem. If I want to activate a new sim I need to pm the rep to activate the sim by placing a new order and then they will manually activate the sim.

We waiting for feedback from the rica team how they are if they even can remove those cancelled greyed out numbers from my id.

So just a warning make sure that you stay below the 10 sim limit cause for now its on your id number for life!

Thanks for the help but lets be honest here. You guys told me clearly that there is nothing that can be done. The limit of 10 sims is there and even if the number gets cancelled it doesn't matter it will still count 1 towards the 10 sim limit.

Its like a lifetime commitment. If you register a sim it will be on your if FOR LIFE. If you decide to port that number out or cancel it it will still be on your ID number FOR LIFE and will STILL be counted as 1 of the 10 sims limit.

Buying a sim and having to wait for the rep here to manually escalate it to be activated is simply not good enough. Telkom mobile just say that is how the system is and nothing can be done to change it. Telkom Mobile is their own worst enemy.

But why buy new sims instead of just migrating your current sim to the new price plans as they come out?

Yeah I made the mistake of throwing the old unwanted sims in the bin. My mistake had I know about this earlier then it might have been a different story. Also the prepaid internet stater pack for R49 comes on a preloaded sim. Its not possible to load it on a sim. Since that offer even beats their own data bundles I thought a couple of these sims won't hurt.

Another thing is when I bought a couple of phones on Telkom Mobile/8ta the agent ALWAYS insits on registering the sim even if I don't want to use the sim. I did not know it would effect me like this in the end.

What gets my blood boiling is that they are just saying sorry its how the system is and they apologise for the inconvenience. If you need a new sim pm us the un ricad sim and we will escalate it to be activated. They don't actually fix the problem.

Can't you just get a sim swap with 1 of the sims that are on your name?

No they are ALL cancelled and dont work but still have them under my name.... Telkom Mobile rep told me if the number should get recycled now it will show that the number is under some one elses name but also as cancelled under mine..... I only have 1 active number with them now.

Telkom should not make their business inefficiencies the customers problem! Remove the SIM from an ID number if the number is not in use after 6 months.

RICA! I am glad they limit the amount of RICA activations on SIM CARDS. Normally around the corner you could buy a SIM CARD RICA'd with someone else's details.

If I RICA 20 sims legally, why shouldn't I? Target the culprits and not the law abiding citizen! Thats just a lazy way of "resolving" the problem. Identify users via monthly reports and investigate.

RICA is a joke. It's much too easy for criminals to circumvent:
* Pay a poor person for his SIM card.
* If you need a letter from a landlord confirming that you stay at an address, you can fake it. By the time anyone discovers that the signature is fake, you'll be long gone.

Well, you should understand one thing. Why they create such law: easy to circumvent and even easier to detect? Everybody is breaking the law, it is their ultimate goal. When time comes, you will be a State witness in Oscar trial by example.

Another way to bypass this would be register with your South African Passport Number. Every time I give my passport they RICA the sim card under my passport number.

Is there a way to get a list of numbers currently on your passport number ?

Just pop into a telkom mobile or telkom shop and ask them to check. It gives them a list. I saw the list on my ID number and and all I saw was 9 greyed out numbers with the status cancelled..... Now I have to go through a big mission to get simcards activated. I wish they can just lift the 10 sims limit to something like 100 then you won't reach that limit in your life time but 10 sims is very unrealistic since the monthly data promo's simcards data can't be loaded and you need a new sime everytime
