The only reason for the:

ONLY 2 Teams Setting up Towers throughout SA.DXL - Team

is that they do not have to physically build many or any new towers but will be using existing Telkom sites and only need to install additional equipment. This can also be done through their normal in-house and current team of contractors, i.e. the same teams that install the links ordered by the other cell operators!!

There is already good coverage in most cities...

Thanks for the update DXL!! :)

Yeh -- but what about the "interconnect"

OK -- you have told us the technical side

BUT

What will the marketing & billing & sales guys come up with

I am on Total-Access -- what will this 3G mean for me  -- think Package-Deals.

I assume that the additional equipment is towers / 3G antennas / microwave and the interface equipment

Please tell me a bit more about how your microwave backhaul links work -- I might need one :) ( for data connectivity -- not -- 3G )

Need to give "WINSTON" a run for his money :D

Only Wimax and the 2.4ghz ISM support microwave backhaul in SA at the moment.

Enquire on this from the providers.

Sorry but I have no idea on this at the moment.

But will keep you updated when i hear something.

Telkom is trying to keep everything tight and under wraps,

They don't don't want MTN & Vodacom playing games with them before they get off the ground, like what was done to Cell-C.

This might get real good. Cause Telkom would be a mobile operator and I garuntee you with their type of funding theyr prices will be lower. Now we are going to have 3 mobile operator that is going to lead and fight. Or so I hope. Cause if telkom is just going to make the same offerings as MTN and Vodacom then there is no point! :)

Saw the telkom coverage map has been updated...with the whole of South Africa. Thou they taking forever to launch! After the recent "Free data" stuff going about people are data hungry !!!

Yes however the map isin't really correct. Cause in Richards bay we have full coverage but on the map they say 0

That's because they have not rolled it out commercially in Richard Bay yet?

I've been using Telkom 3G since April, I'm very happy.
I just wish they would roll out a "check and top up your bandwidth" type website like the ADSL users have.

I use the E960 router , so for me to check my bandwidth I have to either phone or take out the sim and put it in my cell phone.

Thanks

OK maybe the original querry sounded a bit flippant

I see all these big towers on the highest points all over the rural areas.
Used by Telkom ( for link spanning ) as well as the Mobile operators with what is obvioulsy microwave dishes.

So I would REALLY like to know how this technology works.

It might be an alternative for people that cannot get connectivity any other way.

SOooo WHO are the "providers" I need to speak to ????

MW

OK ..... So ????

Very expensive!
Nokia Siemens
Ericsson

That is kinda like saying a piece of string is Llllooooonnnnggggg :)

So who are the agents -- where are the case studies -- where are the white papers ??? where is the sales agent with ALL the figures ???

Expensive is relative -- how many people can you supply ??? what is the per user cost ???

MW

Vague

Contact any ECS/ECNS licence holder...

Thanks -- for being vague :)

The only ECNS holders running microwave can -- I think -- be counted on one hand

Not sure these are the guys that want to go giving away "trade-secrets"

The section of the hierarchy that one needs to speak to are the guys that sell the equipment.

They have NO vested interest apart from trying to sell their equipment.

I am sure one does not need any license to "talk" to them.:erm:

So * DXL - Technical *
please can you tell me who these "contractors" are that I need to speak to ???

Unfortunately for you No equipment vendor will even listen to you unless you have spectrum and a certificate from your Regulator in our case it's ICASA.

Equipment vendors you may try are :

Nokia Siemens
Ericsson
Huawei

So I see the "Knowledge-Commissars" are at work again :(

Everywhere I look people are complaining about the lack of ITC skills

About the poor service SA has the worst broadband services: DoC study

WHERE are people supposed to acquire this knowledge and these skills ???

When an interested party wanting to know more about and understand a technology has to FIRST be part of the "KNOWLEDGE-ELITE"

Indeed something is SERIOUSLY ROTTEN in the "State of Denmark"

Telkom has Confirmed all of the above.

Please read the papers and online media.

DXL - Brought This News First to you guys.

Almost 3 months ahead of the OFFICIAL announcement from Telkom.

I just hope RPM & his Team don't quote the DXL guys as rumours any longer.

In his article he said it was rumours.

It's time now to check whether those rumours were TRUE.
