I received this SMS that looks VERY suspicious, is it real or is it a scam?

Great news! Telkom is upgrading your prepaid Waya-Waya fixed service at NO cost to you. Outdated copper cables will be replaced with wireless for greater reliability. Cable theft and faults will no longer impact you. Upgrade now and receive a free phone worth more than R1000. For more info visit https://tlkm.link/WirelessWayaWaya. To upgrade now, reply YES with your name and contact number and we will call you back. Telkom Team

Thanks,
Ben Bodenstein

Real. What makes it suspicious?

So I gathered when looking at the link and searched on Telkom's website for Waya-Waya. The link just didn't look right to me. Thanks anyway.

Don't touch it, all is not so kosher after all! I went to Telkom Customer services to migrate my mom's prepaid to this Waya-waya and guess what? The consultant tells me it is not a good idea since it is going to cost about R200/month and where my mom is in Bronkhorstspruit the signals may be bad or not there at all. Also Telkom is NOT going to discontinue their prepaid service and this is what point 1 of their Terms and Conditions states: "All current fixed line prepaid customers (PrepaidFone, Waya-Waya prepaid and TopUp) will be impacted by the compulsory migration to the new Wireless Prepaid offer."

They "might" not discontinue their prepaid service, but they are moving away from copper and you will have to eventually either take them up or make use of an alternative.
They're play is to not replace copper infrastructure for much longer going forward.
