So I've been reading a few of the posts regarding Boosters etc and you guys speak in such technical terms I have NO idea what you're talking about :confused:

But just so you can join me for a laugh I'm going to tell you about my call to Telkom ADSL Call Centre where I asked whether it was possible to extend my wireless signal from my study downstairs to my bedroom upstairs so I can use my laptop in my room. The rocket scientist replied that the Telkom routers only send out to 10m and I would have to get..... wait for it..... LONGER CABLES!! Now I'm not a tech-boff but I'm not dof and can get around my pc ok for what I need, so I repeated that to him (just to make sure): "You want me to get a 30m telephone cable, power extension cord and ethernet cable so I can connect to my wireless signal on my laptop when I'm in my room?" and he replied "Yes". Then I asked him whether there were any other ways (knowing that there were such things as boosters) and he said that there weren't.

So, please, would any of you be able to, in simple layman's terms (draw a picture ;) ), tell me what my options are? Is it possible just to PLUG something into my router/pc/whatever so I can use my laptop upstairs?? I'm using a Telkom Mega 100WR router (yes I know... but I had a non-Telkom router first and every time something went wrong Telkom told me it was the modem's fault so I took it back and got the Telkom one).

The usable distance for wireless routers is dependent on may topological things, such as location of router, location of laptop, what's between the two.

Assuming that the laptop and router can connect via wireless, the only way to set it up is via trial and error :(. Try moving the router, normally the higher the better or try it on the other side of the room or in a different room which may require a telephone extention cable.

Sometimes using a cellphone to test wireless connectivity first makes it easier.

Put the router as high as possible and get a longer antenae on your wireless card..Or go for a wireless dongle with a usb extender cable,thats how I managed to pick up signal.Place the dongle where u get the most signal.

OK so I answered earlier but it didn't post. I will repeat: Thanks to all of you for answering!

@Bekdik
I think the distance is the problem. It's about 20m to the other side of the house and then a further 10m to go up 2 flights of stairs. There is a concrete slab between the floors. My Macbook does connect to the wireless, I use it in the study where the router is located and also in the kitchen about 4m away. I can also pick up other wireless signals from my neighbours around me when in my room.

@Juggy
Thanks for the link. Lots of tech jargon but it appears to be what I need if, that is, 1) I can use it on my modem (is it a compatible one? What's an SMA or TNC connector?). The antenna on the router can unscrew, so that's not a problem, and 2) will it send out the signal 30m+ through concrete slabs? I'd hate to buy something from overseas which then doesn't work!

@theratman
The highest the router can go is as far as the Ethernet cable allows +-1.5m unless I can get a REALLY long Ethernet cable? Errrmmm what's a dongle?

I think all the connectors are the same for indoor antennaes. Maybe call them and ask.

You don't need to get it from overseas.
