Telkom SA Local Cap/Usage - Question!!

Hello everyone,

Scenario: I am using Telkom as my ISP. I bought a 1 gig account with them (I get capped after i use the 1 gig) which is fine because i mostly use local sites. I realize that Telkom can charge me R15 for every gig i go over (for local usage) so here is the question:

Question: If i have a 1 gig account what would my local "cap" be (although i know i cant get capped for local usage i really do not want to go over the limit) - Is there an equation? Can i found out?


So in a nutshell, what is my local bandwidth limit for a 1 gig account.

Please help me solve this, it has been bugging me for quite some time!

1 gig account = 10 gig local
3 gig account = 20 gig local
5 gig account = 30 gig local

So if i were to go to "adsl.telkomsa.net" to check my local usage, which is (currently)

Downloaded 210.7472 MB
Combined Total 603.276 MB

for my one gig account, i dont have to worry about extra costs as long as "Combined Total" is smaller than 10 gigs?

On a one gig account you get 1 gig of blended use (combined usage of local and international) and the 10 gig of local. You should only be charged for additional local use if you use more than 10 gig on the local usage connection as per "adsl.telkomsa.net". You would normally only incur local usage once you have been capped on your blended portion. I doubt if you will be charged for any usage on the blended portion even if TI allows you to exceed the 1 GB cap.

The table does not compare the cheapest broadband options. I would rather suggest that when you compare packages that you always compare it to the full ADSL cost (ADSL line rental and ISP cost). If the ISP supplier don't offer an ADSL line rental included into their package, assume a cost of R152 for 386 Kbps lines, and R413 for 4 Mbps lines.

ADSL Line rental, 384 Kbps, 1 GB cap (shaped):
- Cybersmart: R169
- Telkom: R199 (do Broadband 1)
- Web Africa: R199 (DSL Bronze)

ADSL Line rental, 384 Kbps, 3 GB cap (shaped):
- Telkom: R 258 (do Broadband 2)
- Cybersmart: R259

ADSL Line rental, 4 Mbps, 5 GB cap (shaped):
- Telkom: R554 (do Broadband 3)
