Phoned them as well and requested a profile reset, lady said they received an email saying they shouldn't do profile resets while the speed upgrades are in progress because it will "slow down the connection speed".

Go figure.

What a load of crap they are telling you, my line is going full speed.

I doubt it. Think about it, you ask to be bumped to 4mb and your router syncs at 4mb. If indeed they were upgrading the people to 10mb, it would have synced at the new 10mb profile and not 4mb

I think you are missing what I am trying to say,

The system automatically upgrades section by section form 2mbps to 4mbps, if you where not part of that upgrade and you manually upgrade to 4mbps you will fall into the R425 price bracket (4mbps has not yet been updated on the system to R299), then when they get to your area you will not fall as part of the auto upgrade to 4mbps as you are already on 4mbps, however when they do the 4->10mbps you may slip into that upgrade (cost being R425).

I just spoke to one of the rather senior guys at Telkom and was told that they have instructed their agents not to do manual upgrades to 4mbps as the billing will reflect R425.

So all I am saying is good luck and report back when you get your bill, if you get billed R299 then great but if you get billed R425 then good luck getting your money back. I would confirm the billing before insisting on an upgrade.

ROFL, way back when they upgraded the 384kbps people to 1Mbps I also called Telkom to have it upgraded although they said that it is automated, my bill was correct at the end of the month, don't think it should be any different this time around?

But yes, this is Telkom were talking about, you never know. :erm:

Like I said, I am not 100% convinced that is why I will rather wait, if Telkom cannot confirm the pricing then you are taking a chance. This is Telkom remember.

Phone them and ask what the price of the 4mbps line is, still listed as R425.

Also they're aware of the upgrade, they upgraded without even asking for proof that I am the owner of the line, so i think if they wanted to charge us they should have asked for At least an Id number. When the bill comes big I can always reckon someone else did. Some underage individual and fight for the money back :p

I think that if the adsl checker reflects that you are on 4Mbps then there will be no issues at all...

So I just called them up and asked really, really nicely to please move my line to the 4Mb profile as the telkom adsl checker says that I've already been upgraded, and the pleasant woman on the other end did so with just a few clicks.

My issue is that my line stats were terrible beforehand, and now they're even worse. I was syncing at 2048 with just above 100dB noise margin, and now it is syncing at 2720 with 55dB noise margin.

I think I'm going to have to downgrade...:(

You mean 5.5 I think...yeah that won't work.

I'd suggest post a screenshot before asking for a downgrade though. You could also ask for 3mb...though if those numbers are true then thats not going to fly either.

Upgrade done. :)

As mentioned earlier, ADSL checker said I was upgraded, so not worried that I will be charged more.

TelkomZA on twitter helped me.

You should ask your twitter friend what we'll be charged, for people that didn't upgrade yet can known if to proceed by calling and upgrading

I've got a D-Link router which reports it as X10 iirc. But yes, 5.5. No disconnects yet and it's working for now. With those stats though I imagine that I'll have frequent problems moving forward over an extended period...

These are my stats

Downstream Upstream
Line Coding(Trellis): On On
SNR Margin (dB): 61 140
Attenuation (dB): 575 315
Output Power (dBm): 173 121
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 2752 832
Rate (Kbps): 2720 512
D (interleaver depth): 1 1
Delay (msec): 0.13 0.25

HEC Errors: 0 0
OCD Errors: 0 0
LCD Errors: 0 0

Total ES: 0 0

If it works then leave it.

What you can try is something like so:

Start>Run>cmd

ping mybroadband.co.za -n 500 > C:\out.txt & echo "Done"

and then leave it until it says done & check the file for timeouts. That plus keep an eye on the error stats in the router.

Drops normally happen around 8 or lower.

Your attenuation is very high, which means you are extremely far from the exchange. It's not impossible to get 4mbps at that distance, i've got attenuation of 55, but it does get a bit tougher.

Have you ever had a guy out to try and improve your snr? Often it's something as simple as a bad connection somewhere.

Yeah that'll be problematic. Your attenuation is very high, which means you are extremely far from the exchange.

It's been that way since the day it was installed by Telkom, and they've been out a few times to fix one or two minor hiccups. I had to call in serious favours from people to arrange for this line to be installed - took two years and eventually I found myself dealing directly with one of the Telkom executives who had this line arranged for me when no ports apparently existed at the exchange, which really is miles away.

Luckily there is a new MSAN that was installed just up the road from me which I hear is going to go a long way in improving things here. Still no ETA on switch-over to that box though...
