If it works then leave it.

What you can try is something like so:

Start>Run>cmd

ping mybroadband.co.za -n 500 > C:\out.txt & echo "Done"

and then leave it until it says done & check the file for timeouts. That plus keep an eye on the error stats in the router.

Results:

Ping statistics for 197.242.89.170:
Packets: Sent = 500, Received = 500, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 16ms, Maximum = 2192ms, Average = 55ms

The only really high pings happened just a few times and I don't care about ping speed to be honest. I don't need fast pings. I just need to be able to download and stream things from Supersport's site. My issue is that I reckon Supersport streaming might be problematic if it disconnects mid-game and reconnects - not sure how that works or what difference it might make...

It's been that way since the day it was installed by Telkom, and they've been out a few times to fix one or two minor hiccups. I had to call in serious favours from people to arrange for this line to be installed - took two years and eventually I found myself dealing directly with one of the Telkom executives who had this line arranged for me when no ports apparently existed at the exchange, which really is miles away.

Luckily there is a new MSAN that was installed just up the road from me which I hear is going to go a long way in improving things here. Still no ETA on switch-over to that box though...

Another thing to consider is the placement of the router in your home. When i turn on my plasma tv, which is on the other side of the wall, my snr drops by about 1.5. 1.5 could make all the difference for you.

Wow. Tried calling twice and was refused. Tried the Twitter route and got my profile reset within 2 minutes! Great service from the Twitter account.

My router and the telkom plug are right by the tv unit, and the wires behind there are a huge mess. I don't know how I'd move that or if I should even contemplate doing so myself...

The buffering ahead will absorb ping spikes...as long as they don't last too long. Though this will work better on say youtube then live streaming...still should be ok.

Well it's worth a test. Try unplugging all equipment including your tv while looking at your router stats. My stats drop by about 1.5 with the router and tv in different rooms - but sharing the same wall.

Do u guys just tweet TelkomZA your nr?

Yes, with a little more text like please and a mention of speed from and speed to.

Also make sure that ADSL checker says that you were upgraded already. Unconfirmed, you might get charged extra if your upgrade was not processed yet.

Just tried now. Made no difference at all. But thanks nonetheless...

My ADSL has been upgraded from 2mb / 4mb in the Vaal area. Now for the ISP's to pass on the discounts. Called my ISP up (Afrihost) and they said they are waiting on new rates, then they upgraded me to 4mb Uncapped Bundle for only R100 more, and also apologised about the current shaping on downloads.

Hi, you are link to a mini DSLAM that can only handle 4 Mbps because you to far from the main exchange. ^HR

What TelkomZA said even though my Attenuation is 6 and 5 with 30+ SNR at 4 meg.

Anyone able to understand what hes saying? Is he saying the Mini Dslam is too old to support higher than 4 meg or that it is my line?

Hi Scott,
I saw the tweet. I think what he means is that you are connected to a mini DSLAM which is connected to the exchange. The exchange can handle 10mb but the mini DSLAM not. You will have to wait for them to upgrade your mini DSLAM.
This mini DSLAM works like a repeater as you are too far from the exchange.

I hope that makes sense.

You should have gotten her full contact details. I need that person. With my luck I will get downgraded if I call :D

PS, what the hell does this mean?

ADSL Availability
Service Available
Maximum speed available in your area: 4 Mbps
Your Current Service speed: 10 Mbps

It means you been upgraded

Oh ok that does wonder where the Mini Dslam is since I only know where the exchange is, must be close cause of my attenuation, only seen the UMC box down the road.

What does a mini dslam look like?
