Telkom Speed upgrades

Has anyone in PE been upgraded to 10Mb yet?
I've been rebooting my router everyday hoping it syncs at 10Mb.
According to telkom line checker my current speed is 10Mb.

Well here in Noordhoek we still have the old ATM exchange so it only supports up to 4Mb/s.

But I saw a lot of Telkom vans around recently so I stopped and chatted to them a few days back, and they are testing the speeds at the cable boxes (condensers) and are laying pipe. Because at the beginning of Telkoms financial year - next year - they will be upgrading us to 40Mb+ speeds. (Which is awesome)

Where I am I will be able to get 40Mb/s, but people who are right next to the MSANs will be able to get between 81Mb/s and 120Mb/s. (according to the Telkom guy, which is pretty awesome - in terms of future proofing.)
 
If you Line is say with Mweb or webafrica , does this speed upgrade affect you ? do you get an upgrade too?

Your line will be upgraded. The data side, that doesn't look like it will be upgraded just yet for Mweb or web Africa users.
 
Hi Guys
Just silly question. Would it matter if your router is ON Or OFF while they upgrade ( Change your profile from 4meg to 10 meg ) ?

Just checking to see if Telkomsa needs it on.

I usually switch off my router when I go to work ?

They specifically say you should leave your router on.

So after three days of struggling with Telkom and my line they tell me that the faults came about because of the current upgrades.

Somebody screwed up with our exchange upgrade and when I was switched over to 10mbps (even though I never synced at that), the problems started.

The Telkom techie phoned this morning and said he is switching me back to the old setup and problem should be fixed now that I am back on a 4mbps profile. But I will never get 10mbps until they fix the exchange.
 
Oh no seriously , so my line has to be on. Hope they don't miss my profile now. Need to start leaving the router on. Funny enough I used to leave it , just lately I have started turning it off.

Could you please explain to a complete neophyte what "synching" - and not being able to "synch" at the appropriate speed, would do to the end-user experience of the ADSL service?

Sincere question this... I've noticed in my ADSL router setup that the down-speed has increased from 40**kbps to 60**kbps... So, presumably, they have upped the speed in my area/exchange [I was on a 4mb package].

Since that change - I occasionally top out with much higher speeds - 5,2mbps compared to the rock-steady 3,45mbps over the past year - but ping is through the roof - from a rock-steady 16/17.18ms to 550/650/750ms....

Youtube sometimes flies - everything else crawls...

The reason I ask, is that when I initially upgraded to my 4mbps package - I also had massive speedspikes, with terrible consistency/stability... I was told then that someone at TI had me set to 10mbps, but that my line couldn't synch(??) at that speed - or something to that effect... I'm now wondering whether the same hasn't happened now...

Things is - I have no clue what to ask to who - even if to merely get someone to check it... Could someone [oh-mighty-MyBB-ADSL-gurus] PLEASE explain the above, in PLAIN English??

I was on 10 - but too far from exchange so cannot sync at 6Mbps stably. Line was therefore locked at 4Mbit (stable).

Earlier this week it was changed to and locked to max speed of 5Mbit (according to my ISP's line stats). So seems Telkom is now supporting speeds other than the previous 4/6/8 and 10?

(Not enough to keep me paying for 10 though - upstream is still at 512, so no point in paying for more than 4Mbit on my line unfortunately.)

The further you are from the exchange the worse the signal gets which has the effect of lowering the highest speed you can stably connect at. Its got to do with distance and signal noise. While the exchange may be 10mbps enabled, your router is unable to maintain the connection in a stable fashion because the line stats aren't good enough to offer enough buffer to handle the minor fluctuations a line normally undergoes throughout the day. To combat this, Telkom will try connect you at a lower speed than 10mbps which has the affect of improving your line stats and thus giving a more stable connection. As soon as your SNR lowers to around 8 your line may disconnect.

It quite possible 6mbps is a bit high for your line. You'd have to show us your SNR and Attenuation numbers for us to tell for sure. It could also be something else.
