Before the whole uncapped thing, which Mweb initiated , Mweb didn't respond to the market AT ALL. They were overpriced and considered the isp for the moms and dads who didn't know any better. So i wouldn't exactly say they have a reputation of playing the price war. The uncapped move was all they really did , putting them on the map, since then they kept everything pretty much the same for the consumer while tweaking their business packages some, but they never seemed to have lowered their prices in response to competition, they do it when they want to do it.
Either way, while Mweb is pretty solid, the price gap is now just too large. We're talking R200-R300+ per month here on the packages i'm on.
Only because they knew 384kb/s was gonna be upgraded to 1Mb/s country wide and there would be no more 384kb/s in the near future...

From the semi-brush off response I got from MWEB_Guy, I think its more a certainty than anything else.
They were asked when Afrihost et al dropped their prices, and they gave similar types of answers and did nothing.
With telkom 4mb price being the same as mwebs 2mb line it's a no brainer. They've got three days to match the price then it's bye-bye mweb - not necessarily to telkom but possibly one of the others who have reduced their prices.

Yes Openweb dropped prices on Vanilla Uncapped to R339 in response to Telkom`s R369 from Feb 1st. What exactly is Vanilla Uncapped? Their site says "On average around 50% of any given month is unshaped. We do not throttle any of our packages, ever!" How does Vanilla Uncapped compare with MWEB? MWEB does not throttle but do they shape 100% of any given month?
I think MWEB`s product is good. My friend signed up for their 7 day trial yesterday 11:50. I just checked usage and it is at 32396.7MB (31.64 GB) now.

I may not understand the market so well but of all these isp mentioned and who deliver only adsl products that is mweb, afrihost, african web and who else mweb service are number one and now thatb mweb knew what the prices are and already discussing their plans this announcement by Telkom can just give mweb the jikawise and reduced there prices. maybe some of there people/managers at mweb read these threads and they can happy if we can make them feel good. One guy can just say what positive things Pierneef said about them and they can just say let us that doom profts that we are not so and cut prices by 45%+.

Pierneef, they've been discussing their plans for months. The first round of price reductions from Afrihost etc got nothing from Mweb...
And there is no chance that Mweb will cut prices by 45%+... not in any reality. Naspers would not tolerate such a dent in their companies profitability.

^ they might cut MWeb prices if they can make it up on selling products to MWeb customers such as VoD products and so on. I suspect that we wont see much good news from MWeb until a big announcement in the nature of more content hosting services or the launch of a media library service or whatnot.

After getting all excited , I made a call yesterday at the Telkom Direct in the local mall
The good lady there informed me that Telkom will only offer uncapped on the full line speed AFTER hours -- ie "Midnight-Surfer" type setup.:erm:
Telkom will have THREE speed throttling steps according to the time of day !
Perhaps RANGER could comment .........
Maybe the good Telkom lady has outdated info ? ( She did check on her internal Telkom Intranet )
Who is correct ?
Needless to say I did NOT get Telkom "uncapped"
Why spin us a load of old crock ?

You don't say what speed uncapped you were looking at but this might explain why I was getting capped speeds (5Mbs, 6Mb line) on my 2Mb uncapped TI account over the weekend, it'll be interesting to check the speed tonight (I use capped accounts during working hours).
As for the throttling I can only reiterate that I have never experienced it here PE although it used to be in the AUP.

It seems to me that other ISP's follow this line speed time of day throttling thing -- to benefit their business customers
Will have to start doing Speed tests at different times of the day ( and night )
IF Telkom increased the data allowance on their DoBroadband Advanced from 10Gb to 20Gb ( and reduced the price by R20.00 ) then they would have a real winner.
For older folk 20GB is equivalent to "uncapped"

Dude, these changes are only launching on Friday. I phoned Telkom and their calldesk/helpdesk people ARE still on the "current" plans. They can't even see the new pricing, bundles or rules. Telkom's website is updated with the 1 Feb 2013 pricing, but trust me the operators have no idea. After a long battle , i was told they can only help me on Friday, i can't even place an order and have it activated on friday, nope.
Also even if you order online on the website, you will eventually end up with the OLD/CURRENT pricing, so BEWARE in the final stages! So i suggest don't do anything before Friday, you will most likely end up getting billed the old tariffs.
So long story short, i would not trust any helpdesk operator at Telkom right now. Their info WILL be "outdated" and based on the current packages and NOT the new packages.

Don't even expect a helpdesk operator to have any clue what ADSL actually is. We see the stuff in the news (read: mybb) and know about it but they generally don't have any interest in these things. I pay R 539 for MWeb 4meg + R 610 to telkom for copper = R 1149.00. If I go Telkom I'll save R 300.00. I do about 300gigs a month, I'm hoping Telkom's connection is stable as Mweb???
