TelkomZA

Your on ROOIHUISKRAAL (TRHK02) Exchange.

Is it still bad ?

I am noticing tonight my latency is back to normal wonder if TelkomZa managed to do something

Another forum user on same exchange as me got message from TelkomZA that it might be congestion on the Exchange uplink

BTW I see on broadbandstats.co.za TRHK02 is connected to TRHK and TRHK is connected to EDO (my exchange) wonder if there is a relation to the problem

Last tested a week ago. It was still an issue then.

Connectivity is fine after 11PM at night but every evening and most weekends it becomes almost unusable. I've tried different account types on different ISP's with the same results.

The maximum speed I am able to download at (when not throttled) is +-95 kilobytes per second on a 1MB line. My question is, where is my other 32 kilobytes per second and why am I never able to achieve the full 128 kilobytes per second I am paying for?

You will NEVER get 128KB/s, the best you will get is about 104KB/s. Ever heard of protocol overheads? You have TCP/IP protocol overheads, PPPoE overheads, ATM overheads. You're looking at about 16% or so total overhead.

@TelkomZA ... Would like assistance concerning an ADSL that was ordered last year and still has not been delivered.

Background:- (TL;DR)

August 2012, I placed an order for ADSL, only to be told that the following month I can expect delivery.
Next month came, phoned Telkom and they advised there was no infrastructure supported in the Area. (BTW I am just across the Road from that Data centre being built in Midrand)

So I gave up on all hope (kept my order opened) , got myself IBurst and 2 8ta sim cards.(I’m paying a complete fortune TBH)
This year, during our body corporate meeting, many tried to get ADSL , however received the same response.
In May 2013, there was wind that the body corporate got some feedback from telkom. What telkom required was a trace wire to each apartment and a Telkom box installed next to each block unit. This was completed during may.

Now sometime over this month, I get a call from Telkom offering me do simple plan, which I went for, a few days go by and I just get spam messages non stop about services telkom has offered (I.e. Email services, then some messages about contact enquiry desk and one about the cloud storage service they offer).

Another week goes by and once again we cannot offer you service, dates change again.Honestly feel like I am being lied to, so Telkom can gather my personal infrormation and sell it to other companies.

Questions:-

1.Why try to get a customer to place another order, when they are aware that the original order is still open?

2.What bothered me about this all, First Telkom BAIT's me into thinking that the reason I am receiving these messages is due to actually getting ADSL. Can Telkom rather activate the services once I confirm my order rather?

3.Can a customer actually pay a installation fee to speed up installation process (I cannot believe there is no infrustructure since a new business got built up across the road and they not using WiMax, so they must have somehow got some means of getting a fixed line)?

4.One thing I noticed, If Telkom cannot offer people service delivery, they hand over personal information over to 8ta to contact the client to offer 3G. Can Telkom rather look on their system and see they have already done this the first time around? It was upsetting to have a call center offer me another 3G device (After I made it clear that I already own 2), after I made it clear that I was paying +/- R1000 for internet currently and cannot afford more? The upsetting part was how pushy

5. What can I actually do about getting a fixed line? I am not permitted to run WiMax (complex rules), 3G gives me 3000 ms ping when playing games, Iburst is just terribly, there really is no choice for me anymore.

Hi TelkomZA

Please help me

I was using a Linksys router, never had a problem, and all of a sudden about 3 months ago I can't connect anymore - the DSL light blinks and won't stay on.

Then I connect the line to my old Billion router and it connects fine.

So i thought ok this Linksys router must be broken.

Then I bought a new D-Link 2750U router. It gave me the same problem!! DSL light just blinks and never stays on. (The DSL light blinks like as if I never plugged in the telephone line)

I switched back to the Billion router and it works.

I then took the D-Link router and my Linksys router to my neighbour's house, and they BOTH work fine and connects to the internet. That rules out any problems with the router or its settings.

At the moment my lines only takes my Billion router.

I tried explaining this problem to Telkom via all channels with no hope of them understanding what my problem is.

Please help? What could be the problem? Someone from this forum suggested that the quality of my line must have dropped to below the level that can be tolerated by these 2 routers?

Hi TelkomZA, Have sent you a private message with problem to be resolved.. Please be so kind to reply ASAP, tx

TelkomZA, i hope you can assist with an issue - I will PM you the details.
I have sent a follow up PM - It's 14 days since the original Install/Transfer date given by Telkom, 2 cable faults reported and no Telkom service. Please Escalate!

Hi TelkomZA - a suggestion:

Last night the ADSL portion of my line went dead at 20:03 - Voice OK.

Swopped modems, accounts, rebooted firewall etc - no joy.

Log fault via SMS at 20:52

Fault 195CEK290813 created at 00:03 (SMS time)

ADSL still dead at 07:00 this am (voice OK), rebooted modem & firewall and ADSL came up on TI capped. Swapped to TI uncapped ADSL stayed up.
I'm guessing they were busy at the exchange last night (although my speed is still 6Mbps :() but the reason for this post is that currently there is no facility for your clients to update the status of a fault on your system either on-line or via SMS - could you explore this possibility?

I was phoned re this fault at 08:30 and was able to clear it but techies have turned up for past faults without contacting us first thus wasting their time.

Just a thought :)

I made use of the "let's pm TelkomZA" option today, and I must say the guy really responds super quick. I'll see tonigh if the "dslam is congested" problem has been fixed.

Would it be taboo to complain about +-95 kilobyte per second download speeds on a 1MB line? Full 1MB speed is 128 kilobytes per second. So about 30 kilobytes unaccounted for.

You're forgetting about protocol overheads.

Not too technically clued up. Please explain. I had a 1MB account from telkom previously (year or so ago) and easily got in excess of 120 kilobytes per second speeds back then.
