TelkomZA

Try using the Twitter account, I find it's normally quicker.

That's because Social Media support/teams generally aim to deliver <2 hours to respond to both forum and Facebook wall posts, whereas Twitter is more "real-time" so <20 minutes per response - give or take.

Sigh, someone help me, switched out routers, ISP accounts etc, this crap started a few days ago..

Post it, so we can see where the latency is being introduced.

Modem stats are decent; hows your throughput?

Remove all devices from your line, and then connect a corded handset to the first available phone socket. Then check for any audible noises on the line, or if there's an issue with the dial tone.

Current throughput on Steam downloading from a local server is 1.4KB/S

Unplugged everything, plugged in corded phone, no sign of signal interference.

Phoned helpdesk, reset the port, still the same, switched out routers, still the same, tested with Afrihost, still the same.

No idea why it says 2mb, I'm getting a solid 1.0KBps on Steam.. Also most media is unloadable.

How many devices are connected to your modem? Disable the wifi function on your modem; connect one computer (only) to it via Ethernet connection and test your downloads again.

Not looking good at all. Congested DSLAM maybe; do issues arise during peak hours only?

Multithread vs single thread downloads, but that's another topic for some other thread (<- pun :)).

Yep, its fine again this morning, oh boy, does this mean the DSLAM needs to be upgraded? I'll have to start looking at wireless options.

Congestion's generally on the backhaul. It affects everyone (all DSLAMs, all ISPs), so bigger trunks and lower contention ratios are the way forward, but it won't happen any time soon. Unless you're willing to pay a lot more for an actual business grade service, with actual SLAs.

I'll have to start looking at wireless options

Pretty much so, yes, or downgrade to the cheapest DSL plan if you're willing to give up regular speeds during off-peak hours.

Well it's been nearly a month since telkom came to "fix" my line, was told there is corrosion and they will need ot replace the entire line, well now my line is dropping every 10 - 15mins and i have to reboot the router. I'm guessing telkom are off till who knows when so this is going ot be an awesome festive season.

Hi telkom

I have a problem with not enough ports in my area. I have been waiting for 4 months and still no feedback. Isn't there a way you can move me to another port box or something ... realy want my adsl line ....

You'll have to wait till someone cancels their service, or relocates. Keep applying till one becomes available though, because AFAIK there isn't a virtual queue or a "reserve a DSLAM port" option when signing up.

I would PM Ranger and provide him with the info.

Can't conclude that it's Telkoms problem without seeing the whole traceroute.

Hops in the middle with higher latency generally means that hosts are under heavy CPU load and de-prioritising replies to your packets over more important things. This won't impact regular packet shifting operations.

Just want to thank TelkomZA for organising my upgrade from 1 - 2 Mbps.
Sent a PM and it was sorted out today.
Much appreciated!
