It is a pleasure for me to say thanks to Vodacom today. About a month ago I posted on these forums asking how to request a consideration for a 3G tower. V3G replied that he would look into it, and so he did. Vodacom have listened to one person asking a question and responded immediately. They saw that the area was indeed in need of 3G.

I am happy to announce that after 1 month, I am typing my first post on a 3G connection. Thanks Vodacom, I will never use another provider - purely because of great service in my case.

Thanks again on behalf of the whole community.

Thanks for the positive feedback iDDQDm0de and for taking the time to post it. I hope you milk the bandwidth before the rest of the community wakes up ;)

Great news. Hopefully the start of great service from all our telecoms companies!

Great to hear the tower is up. The guys told me to bargain on March/April but they'd try to get it up sooner.

What modem are you using? Would be interesting to see what you get on a UPA modem.

Using an E220. I bet if I had the better modem it would have massive upload.

Yes, you should get around 1100Kb/s upload on a E272 or similar. Would be cool to see how close to 3.6 you can get while no-one knows about the tower yet. ;)

he's not even close. 2118 kb/s ?

good work on the new tower though...

He's getting 2118 on a 1800 profile using a modem that desperately wants to run at 3600. ;) Or at least I'm assuming this. :)

The profile is managed on the network and the network will keep him as close as possible to 1800. Obviously if other bottlenecks were present his speed would be below 1800.

So, if you ever get numbers over 1800 and you're on the normal profile, using a 3.6 or 7.2 modem, there is a good change that you'll see higher speeds once you activate the 3.6 profile. But you obviously won't know beforehand how high it will go.

What a positive outcome.
I feel 2009 is gonna have many 'ah' moments.
Is a HSDPA data modem much faster then a Nokia HSDPA enabled cellphone?
Basically is it worth forking R2000 for the difference.
Slight derail sorry.

IMO phones aren't the way to go, but that's just my experience - I stand corrected.

V3G, if he manages over 3000 on a 3.6 profile - i'll buy you a bottle of whiskey.:o

EDIT: and I give you the right to kick me in the bawlls.

Won't comment on your bizarre sexual preferences but will take you up on the Scotch! :)

@iDDQDm0de: Can you get hold of an E272 and test? There's half a bottle of Blue in it!

and to be fair - a test using Speedtest.net, right?

I'm willing to bed he'll hit over 3mpbs ;)

*awaits results*

PS: Why didn't it cost money to activate the 3.6? Last I checked it costs R50 or so?

Still I am happy as a sun of a gun. But the people caught on to the tower. My brother-in-law said: "Woah! Die Mxit is %&^* vinnig ou!" - Had a good laugh.

uhh...proof?

EDIT: Damnit...

EDIT2: Where you in your house or waving the modem around in the air while standing on the roof?
