The 200,000+ km thread

Just wondering, what is the average mileage before you can expect to open the engine or replace the gearbox? Mine had to be opened when they did the head gasket at 197,000km but the gearbox is still going (notchy in true Opel fashion).
 
2005 Merc C220 cdi, 430 000km, I've had to replace the starter motor, and the alternator and high pressure fuel pump have been reconditioned. Most expensive maintenance item is tyres. The bloody thing just chews rear tyres, so I usually just drive until one or the other blows out and then replace them both.
 
My Colt 4x4 2.8 TDi, sitting at 270000km, only replaced front wheel bearings and refurb the propshaft. What a truck! Half-life reached I suppose. Going to Moz again soon for some sand trials!
 
Im considering buying a E350 Merc. 2005 but only 130,000 on the clock. Seller wants R150K. Trade in offered at merc is R170K. Im I setting my self up for financial pain or should i be good for another 100Kms? only one owner and in awsome condition.

uhm .... can you afford to fix it should it break? these cars use very expensive parts
 
My first car was a 95 Honda Balade 150 that I bought from my dad when it had 330 000KM on the clock. I got it in 2006 and sold it in 2008 when it was on 360 000 KM. The dude that bought it drove it as a long haul taxi to Botswana for 3 years before writing it off in an accident. Always wanted to find out how many K's it had on it then. Such reliable cars are Honda's.

My current 1.6l Astra I bought at 75 000KM and it just got its 150K service and I wish I could get rid of it. Opel's don't seem very reliable. The Astra has required over R6000 work in the past 3 months. The Honda only started costing me that kind of cash after it hit 340 000KM. I guess that is why Opel is in trouble and Honda just won the most reliable second hand car competition for the 7th year in a row or something.
 
I had a 1996 Golf MK3 with 430000km. The day the next owner drove it off was sad!

I sold the old 2001 Renault Megane 1.4 last year. She had 256k on the clock when she finally started with major engine problems.

My 2007 Navara is on 160k and still going strong.
 
My odometer just tripped 300,000 today. :o

1998 Toyota Corolla 1.6 GLE with 290 000km. People still offering me in the region of R40k for it.
 
1994 Toyota Corolla 1.6GLe with 456263km+

Head gasket was replaced at around 420000kms. Rest is as is. Still going strong.

Not going to sell it. :D

Aircon need replacement - not cooling down well enough on hot days :(


edit : bought it 2nd hand for the princely sum of R40000 at Cartoria Toyota in Arcadia in the year 2000... it already had 80000kms on the clock.

It's a 2001 Audi A3 - bought it new.

The fuel gauge hasn't worked in the last 5-6 years and the display in the centre of the pic went on the fritz about two years ago so the only way to know how much fuel remains is when the warning beep goes off, and even then I have to check the washer fluid to see if that isn't setting off the warning. :o
 
My Astra is close to 210,000km now, did the head gasket a year ago. Still drives like a dream but we might need something larger now that my daughter is just over 6 months old.

Old car: Opel Monza 1.8 GLX got to ~312 000km before I sold it. Was stuffed by then though- I was spending more ZAR on oil than on petrol :eek:

Current car: 1.7DTI Corsa Bakkie is ~117 000. Hoping to get this one up to 300 000 too :)

Unfortunately it beeps when other things go wrong - the other day I kept topping things off (petrol, washer, radiator, oil…) and it turned out to be a brake light. :o
