The Bafana Bafana Thread

Not sure think they have 5 in a pool an top 2 goes through but someone can confirm
Africa has the hardest qualifying of all confederations. If we win this group then we go through to the next round to play home and away against the other group winners. So from the 10 group winners it gets cut into 5 and they go on to the WC. Europe is relatively easy as they have more spots. They have like 10 groups with no qualifying for those getting into the groups so you get groups with like Andorra and San Marino in them. The winners qualify straight to the WC. Then to make matters worse the 2nd place teams have a chance to qualify as well in their own round robin tournament.

South America is easiest as almost half the continent qualifies for the WC and they have an opportunity to have a fifth team qualify through the inter-confederations qualifiers. Africa's qualifiers for WC are stupid difficult.

Just looking at the maths here. Africa really gets shafted. We have way more football powerhouses than AFC and CONCACAF but we get shafted on our WC spots compared to them.

Last Minute Frantic Action.

SAFA should exercise their option to appeal.

In any case, it had been a great campaign; it is just a shame that we got cheated out of a play-off spot.

Umuntu akalale.

It was a gallant fight but at the end of day we were just not good enough, can't help feeling that it was a mistake keeping Dolly on the bench, anyway...

The coaching staff's decision making has been brilliant throughout this campaign. Except in the last match. I did feel that Tau needed Dolly's touch. He should have been introduced earlier, at least at Half Time.

Yeah we really had a tough pool but at least we gave it a good shot and future seems brighter than a couple of years ago

Great try by the team. 2022 was never the goal but it stings knowing we were close. Tough group and a completely different feel to the team. First time in a long time that we don't need to go back to drawing boards and no need to fire people. We are on a good track here.

While we are very far from the Vision 2022 plan announced in 2010, these WC qualifiers on there own were good.

I can accept coming second to Ghana and 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss is not bad. If only we had won that first match though.

This is definitely good progress. However the main issue that has plagued SA for years is still there - the lack of goals, which is also an issue in the PSL as well.

Has the outcome of a match ever been changed? I doubt they'll get anywhere, FIFA and CAF will just rule that mistakes happen or just refuse to even consider it.
Well, if the governing bodies consider it serious enough then it's not impossible to have the match replayed. A couple of years ago SA had to replay a match after the original ref was found to be guilty of match fixing. So a replay can be granted, if the evidence if strong enough I guess.

If only FIFA could move us to North America like how they moved Israel to Europe for political reasons (even though it's closer to Africa and Asia), we'd qualify for every World Cup.

North America gets six nations in the World Cup from 2026 and most of the nations there are lower than Bafana Bafana's level.

The whole reason for the expanded World Cup was to prevent a repeat of 2018 (where USA, Italy and Netherlands didn't qualify) because that cost FIFA a lot of money.

With the new format, it's easier for the USA to qualify than not qualify but it will still be hard for us as Africa will still only be getting nine places from 2026.

The top 5 in the next stage go through without playoff with Europe. It's the Eurasia winner who play off. In the last Africa let the 5 group winners through but now they've changed for more TV money.

Agreed I see portugal and Italy didn't finish top of the group so they go to playoffs, wish we had the same luxury but I guess its all about the money
