The Bafana Bafana Thread

Then you don't watch that much football. The same Bayern was smacked 5 - 0 recently by Gladbach. Spain was knocked out of the world cup in the group stages in Brazil. Same fare befell Germany in Russia. Italy didn't even qualify. Football minnows Iceland has seen more world cup finals football in recent years than USA. Etc.

Did you know the biggest football club in ZA has never won CAF's Champions League? Costs Rica reached the quarterfinals in one of the world cup finals...
You do know wat exception to the rule means right?

In sports you can also call it an upset/unexpected result.

The fact that you mention those games like that proves my point.

C'mon this isn't that difficult.

Ocon winning a grand prix is an exception to the rule. Top teams losing to small teams is a little more common that that. I mentioned those matches because even people who watch football occasionally might recall them.

It is a fact that qualifying under CAF is a lot more difficult than in other federations and it is also a fact that the chances for Africa are greatly diminished with only five teams in the world cup, which one is tripping you up?

No, I'd safely say Asia is the hardest.

Australia played 22 matches to reach the World Cup in 2018, including two two-legged playoffs. Only the CONMEBOL teams played anywhere close to that number.

8 group games in the Second Round of qualifying.
10 group games in the Third Round of qualifying.
A two-legged playoff in the Fourth Round of qualifying.
Then a two-legged playoff in the intercontinental playoffs.

On top of this, the travel involved when qualifying in Asia is gruelling. Australia had to travel to the Middle East, Central Asia, the Far East, South East Asia and finally Central America.

You should be comparing qualifying to leagues, not once or games/upsets.

The last place team might beat the first place team on any random day, but there is still a gulf in quality and points that separate them.

In terms of travelling, yes and conditions, possibly. However, I'd say Asia is not as competitive as a whole compared to Africa and that is why roughly the same teams qualify from there for every world cup with maybe one or two interchanges as Saudi Arabia for instance tend to qualify and then miss the next edition.

African teams are shít.

We put in an okay performance, but just not good enough.

Economic situations sadly affect the performance of African teams and many of its best players end up playing for European nations as they seek better opportunities.

France and England are made up of a great deal of African origin players and would be far weaker without them.

It's going to be a tough issue to fix but with FIFA starting the 48 team world cup, it's going to create more opportunity for African and Asian teams to go deeper in the World Cup. With some luck, one could win it.

The new World Cup format makes it more like the English FA Cup whch churns out a totally unexpected winner every now and then.

The way that Ghana fared in the Afcon proved that Bafana were actually made to look better than they actually are in the World Cup qualifiers.

I must say, these young Boys are playing real well as a team. No egos, nothing. Guinea are a blend of physical and skilful. These games are great for experience and I am glad we have a coach with a long term goal in mind.

Yeah, I feel Makgopa could have put in more effort in the chance he had, I don't know what's wrong with our players, there's just not enough belief, that attempt was so lame.

They are playing well and creating chances though, it looks progressive.

Yeahp. A sneaky 1-0 win here would be nice, followed by a respectful and experience gaining 2-0 loss against France would be a good international break for me.

Maybe a tad OT, but has anyone thought about the fact that Bafana Bafana hasn't qualified for a World Cup since 2002 (the year I was born)? And no I don't count 2010 since we were the hosts (who got knocked out in the group stage anyway).

Has been 20 years... Damn ref from the Ghana game...

The only thing I picked up here is you were born in 2002. Yoh!

We were once good, but its been awful ever since. I'm sure we'll qualify for one soon.

I've seen some vids of late 90's/early 2000's Bafana, they are a different ballgame in comparison to the current Bafana. They played so well...

We use to play good football, we have always had foreign coaches, from Europe and South America. Jeff Butler, Palacios, Dimitri, and later Dolezar and Muhsin.

What I liked about that era in our football is that the coaches did not come here and tried to impose their ways and looked down on our football, instead they identified our strengths and made them work even better for us, they did introduce their ways of doing things but it wasn't in the "what you were doing all along is rubbish" manner that it's being done today.

Those were the days we played our best football, just to show how good they were, we had players who were not very gifted but they were able to get the best out of them, we produced the best strikers and our leading goalscorers were mostly local players.

Something changed along the way and our players started passing each other aimlessly even when they in front of goals, they are just zombies who cannot think themselves, they are afraid to take shots at goal and you can see in how they play that they are afraid of making mistakes and are terrified of the coaches.

During that time when our football was being modernised there came about a saying that as a striker you should not try to kill the goalkeeper, just place the ball, that's what what Bafana has been doing tonight. I honestly think we should go back to the good old days of killing the goalkeeper because it used to work for us.
