The Bafana Bafana Thread

Yes, especially if it's as a result of shoddy officiating.

But that's a bit different in that the ref was found to have been involved in match fixing. I see SAFA have asked Ace Ngcobo to do an analysis of the officiating and Ace says he's done the first half and found that in decisions, the ref was 89% biased against SA. Not sure if the analysis will hold as it isn't really independent and FIFA will probably not bother looking at the analysis.

I see people are unhappy with the qualifying process and allocation of places at the WC. You need to look at the overall strength of the confederation as a whole.

Average ranking per confederation:

CONMEBOL - 31st
UEFA - 68th
CAF - 110th
CONCACAF - 117th
AFC - 122nd
OFC - 149th

Allocated WC Spots:

UEFA - 13
CAF - 5
CONMEBOL - 4.5
AFC - 4.5 (+1 for the host nation)
CONCACAF - 3.5
OFC - 0.5

Now everyone may think UEFA is over-represented, but you now need to consider that as of the latest FIFA rankings, 13 of the world's top-20 ranked nations are in Europe, so suddenly those 13 spots seem deserved.

Another way to look at it, South Africa is the 12th best African nation per the rankings. The 12th best team in Europe is Croatia, the World Cup runners-up. I think we can all agree that Croatia and South Africa are world's apart in footballing terms.

CAF's representation, all things considered, is a fair representation of the strength of the confederation.

Agreed I see portugal and Italy didn't finish top of the group so they go to playoffs, wish we had the same luxury but I guess its all about the money
They are also just better at soccer so deserve to qualify.

African teams are shít.

We put in an okay performance, but just not good enough.

No chance of the result being overturned. Fifa didn't do it for the blatant henry handball so no chance here.

As for wc qualifying, could always try what aus did and move federations.

BS man.

There are some poor teams but there are also some great teams on the continent: Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, Mali, Burkina Faso - All are decent teams. There are also outsiders who perform well but are in a bit of a dip at the moment such as Angola, Cape Verde, Zambia, Togo etc. I mean Namibia is also playing some decent football. We suffer as a continent from poor grassroots development and having to play weak neighbours which never gives us great ranking points. North Africa are strong because they play eachother more often and develop into stronger teams. Same with west Africa. Bafana are at a disadvantage because we play relatively weaker teams in southern Africa so often.

No ****, Africa has weaker teams but giving 5 WC spots for 55 odd nations does not help us at all.

This is all cope and why we are shít. We should stop looking for excuses and just be better. Same with rugby and cricket. (Well rugby is doing okay right now.)

Africa has Senegal 20 Algeria 30 and Nigeria 36. In the fifa rankings.

The world cup is for the best teams. Africa has 3 teams in the top 50. Giving Africa 5 spots in the world cup is very generous.

100%, There is just no hope of improving if the odds are stacked so high against us.

Man you are a forever victim. Everyone plays by the same rules.

It is a fact that qualifying under CAF is a lot more difficult than in other federations and it is also a fact that the chances for Africa are greatly diminished with only five teams in the world cup, which one is tripping you up?

No it is not. Africa has weaker teams. Weaker competition means qualifying is easier.

Can't argue with stupid.

"Just get better", "They are all ****"

There are systemic issues that limit teams competitiveness outside of football of course but there are also Fifa issues limiting the teams in Africa. How can you expect to compete when qualifying is as grueling as it is and seriously limiting to teams. Its a shock if Italy or France or England don't make it into qualifiers, even Netherlands and Portugal but if Senegal doesn't make it then its just because....

Africa deserves better. Thats all.

Yeah look I'd maybe agree that having a system whereby only the winner goes through could produce more upsets, but the reality is the best teams went through overall.
We had to play 6 games so it's not like it's a long and arduous campaign. Fewer games does mean you can't mess up though, there's less of a safety net but again if I look at who got through it seems like's it's working.
Ethiopia are ranked like 150th. Zimbabwe also in the hundreds somewhere. We should be thrashing those teams, let alone drawing.
In reality there were two games we needed to win and we couldn't.
Look I watched the Ghana SA game and very dodgy penalty aside, we were bad. Two shots on target or something like that, at least until late in the game? I want us in a WC as much as the next guy but I also shudder to think what a France would do to us, or Germany.
Now yes there's plenty reasons why it's harder for us to improve, I mean when's the last time we played a non-African team, it's been ages. But there's plenty within our control that we can sort out so until do do sort it out i don't think it helps to blame the system we're in. That goes for SA and Africa.
Africa didn't have one team in the knock out stages of 2018. You'd have a hard time convincing me Africa should have more teams in the WC when our best aren't quite up to it.
Not trying to knock Africa specifically, I agree there's a bunch of things against us and sure we know FIFA will be Euro (or money) focused. But lets get our **** together first.

Well yes obviously it would be a shock if the top 5 teams or past finalists don't make it. They should qualify automatically in my opinion.

It is not unfair that they are better.

There's two sides to the argument that we should play better teams in order to improve.

You can improve locally if we have a strong and competitive league with great grassroots development. We have enough potential players.

If you play stronger teams and they just smash you you loose confidence and perform even worse. Ideally you want opposition that is of equal strength. And a highly competitive environment.

Ever watched a football game? Ever seen a number 50 ranked team beat a number 1 ranked team? The beautiful game is often unpredictable.

Bayern lost to Augsburg by 2 - 1 last night. How do you explain it?

When SA was accepted back by Fifa we were beaten by everyone despite having the best players at the time, it was simply lack of experience and competing at a high level, fast forward to 96 we were good enough to not only compete but win, 98 and 2002 we were at the world cup, that's what playing teams does for you.

Our U23 was busy playing the best in the world and being very competitive, we beat Brazil in the Olympics. Our teams in CAF can today compete against the best in Africa and beat them, I mean Amazulu just beat Mazembe the other day.

Your notion of sticking with equal strength teams is just baffling to say the least, We need Fifa to reconsider their terms, reset the whole thing and give Africa more places in the World Cup, many teams in Africa like South Africa lost out on competing internationally because of things that had nothing to do with football, Fifa cannot just shrug that off, they owe it to the beautiful game not to preserve the status quo.

Exception to the rule. You expect the better team to win 9/10

Obviously everything I said is way over your head. So just don't bother.

Then you don't watch that much football. The same Bayern was smacked 5 - 0 recently by Gladbach. Spain was knocked out of the world cup in the group stages in Brazil. Same fare befell Germany in Russia. Italy didn't even qualify. Football minnows Iceland has seen more world cup finals football in recent years than USA. Etc.

Did you know the biggest football club in ZA has never won CAF's Champions League? Costs Rica reached the quarterfinals in one of the world cup finals...
