The Bafana Bafana Thread

The Bafana squad to kick-off the CAF qualifiers against Niger in Mbombela has been named. The squad remains largely unchanged from the one that beat Ghana about two weeks ago. It's good to see some under 20 youngsters being called up to the squad. The new players are Keegan Ritchie, Happy Jele, Daylon Claasen, Kermit Erasmus

Bafana squad:

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune, Moeneeb Josephs

Defenders: Siboniso Gaxa, Morgan Gould, Tsepo Masilela, Aaron Mokoena, Anele Ngcongca, Siyabonga Sangweni, Bongani Khumalo, Innocent Mdledle, Keegan Ritchie, Happy Jele

Midfielders: Siphiwe Tshabalala, Daine Klate, Teko Modise, Thanduyise Khuboni, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Steven Pienaar, MacBeth Sibaya, Andile Jali, Daylon Claasen

Strikers: Katlego Mphela, Kermit Erasmus, Bernard Parker, Sthembiso Ngcobo

The squad looks good, and nothing less than a win will be good enough in this game. The qualifiers will be tough since only the team that wins the group is ensured of a place. There are 2 places at the tournement for the 2 best runners up, but this be complicated since one of the groups now has 3 teams. That means that the 2nd placed teams will likely be ranked only by their points against the 1st and 3rd ranked teams in the group.

How is that one of the groups has 3 teams when another has five ??????? Why can't they move the fifth team to the group with 3 teams

Oh now that's a royal mess .
Imagine if one of the minows (Niger or Seara Leone) from our group were to pull out...we would be left with no chance of qualifying unless we top the group which would require us to beat Egypt.:confused:

Actually that the reason for the rule. 2nd placed teams are ranked only on the points they have gained against the 1st and 3rd placed teams in their groups. This way 2nd placed teams in groups of 3 can still go through.

Based on current form, it should be a comfortable win. My prediction would be a 2-0 win to Bafana.
 
SABC are actually doing prematch coverage right now. Can't wait for this game to start.

We completely outplayed Niger! It would have been nice to get 1 or 2 more goals, but a win keeps us on the right track. The next game will be a true test though, away to Siere Leone.

Yeah, I have to admit that we were all over them. We just need to learn to convert some more of the many "clear" chances we had and the scoreline could easily have been 5 or more!

Yip, but at the end we may be thankful that we only beat them 2-0, because of the stupidity of only counting points from teams 1 and 3 in a group to work out the best 2nd placed teams.

I'm very pleased that we won, make no mistake about that. But we should have scored plenty more goals.

I watched from the last bit of the first half (after watching my other team lose) and really thought we would see a 5-0 or even bigger score.
 
We really need to bank on clear shots, other than that I'm proud, PARKER! We should have had more of him in the cup =/
 
Sierra Leone drew to Egypt in Cairo last night so our group may become a 3 way shootout.
 
I was disgusted with the way we failed to score more goals. We should have buried them. 5 - 0 at least. Not happy at all.
