The next 2 AFCON qualifiers will show what Bafana are made of. Sierra Leonne away and Egypt at home.
 
Can anyone help with a quick summary on how these qualifiers work?

We have 4 teams in our Group, Im assuming the winner and runner up goes through to a 'next stage', does it mean the bottom 2 teams are kicked out? What happens to the 2 group winners, if they go to a knockout stage, than what is the difference between this and the actually Afcon cup?

Oh - And do we verse each team twice in group stages (Home and Away)

It's a bit tricky, but I will try to explain. The tournement is for 16 teams, but is co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, so they get 2 spots, leaving 14 qualification spots. 44 teams were then put into the draw for qualification groups, Tgo wa excluded, as they were still banned. They 44 teams were drawn into 11 groups of 4. So, the 11 group winners would qualify, and the 3 best runners up would qualify, no play-offs unlike Euro 2012.

After that things got messy, Togo were un-banned, and added to group K. That meant that the group had 5 teams. CAF then said that the top 2 from group K would qualify. That meant the 11 group winners, group K 2nd place, and the 2 best runners up in the other groups qualify. Then to complicate things, Mauritania withdrew from their group, leaving a group of 3. Now, to decide on the best placed 2nd placed teams, only points gained against the 1st and 3rd placed team in a group count.

Basiclly yo want to win your group, or do REALLY well and hope for the best.

Hmmm... it seems that Pitso is going to make a lot of his doubters eat a big chunk of humble pie. I must admit that I was also cautiously optimistic but now I can see that the man has the right vision for SA soccer.
One thing that I've noticed about him is that he does not conduct himself like a typical nation team coach - those that you only see or hear about when the World Cup and AFCON comes around. I've seen him at most local games. The fact that he's putting his own money into developtment of coaches and players speaks volumes about the man. This is a far cry from the Brazilians that were mainly interested in the loot and the extra padding on their own CVs at our own expense.
I have to salute him for trying even if the results don't come as expected I suppose that we the public will be more forgiving.

He is doing great work, but that useless bunch at SAFA need to start getting the junior leagues going. It's no good with the current set up, a decent PSL, and a wasteland below it. Merging the NFD, which is happening next season, is a start, but we still need an U19 league, and proper schools leagues.
 
I see a big fight coming:

Johannesburg - SAFA CEO Leslie Sedibe has once again warned the SABC they risk losing their broadcast rights for Bafana Bafana games.

SAFA will hold talks with the national broadcaster next month - with Sedibe pushing for an improved deal on their current one, which expires in April.

"We know exactly what we want and we have already finalised our broadcast strategy," Sedibe told Business Day.


"Obviously we want to continue working with the SABC but not under these difficult conditions.


"We cannot continue like this because the current contract is ludicrous," he said.


In 2007, the Premier Soccer League dumped the SABC for SuperSport International in a broadcasting deal worth R1.6bn over five years.


And Sedibe says SAFA are looking for similar terms.


"If we are unable to reach a deal, then we will have to take our business elsewhere," Sedibe said.


"The new deal that we will propose to the SABC will not be very different from the one that the PSL has with SuperSport International."


SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said he was disappointed with SAFA's position.


"They are already talking about alternatives before we have even started discussions," he said.


"Then you have a problem. The fact is we do not know what they are thinking and they certainly do not know what we are thinking around this whole issue.


"Let them come to the table and then we can reach common ground. We do not want to say anything that will pre-empt what the discussions are going to be and how they are going to play out before they take place," Kganyago said.


The current contract, which was signed in April 2005, does not generate any direct revenue for SAFA who are also expected to contribute to the costs of broadcasting a match.

Here's my take on it, I'd love the SABC to have the games, as I would want everyone to be able to watch the games. That being said, the SABC need to up their broadcast package. Every game needs to be shown live, no question. Also we should get pre-match broadcasts, not the current set-up for mid-week games, where coverage starts after Generations, as the players are coming out of the tunnel. I'd love to see DSTV also get some sort of rights to broadcast the games live. I think that DSTv deliver a better quality production, and DSTV are likely to want the rights too. Also, DSTV can broadcast with multiple language channels, so you can chose which language you want for the whole game.
 
Surely there will be a massive advertising revenue loss if the PSL games move off terrestrial TV?

The SABC under Dali Mpofu used to say SS ought to be learning from them because they have been broadcasting sports for years. Such arrogance means there's not much chance of them improving on the production side.

And the fight for TV rights has begun:

Johannesburg - Government looks set to intervene in the escalating battle for the right to broadcast Bafana Bafana matches on television.

Last week reports emerged that the South African Football Association were aggrieved by the existing contract with the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

SAFA CEO labelled the current deal, which expires in April 2011, as "ludicrous" and revealed the governing body would "take (their) business elsewhere" if they and the public broadcaster failed to agree on new terms.

The two parties will hold initial talks about renewing the contract in October, but with SuperSport International as a possible rival to the SABC, parliamentary sports committee chairman Butana Komphela told Business Day he was ready to step in.

"We are worried that we are about to see a repeat of what the PSL did in 2007," he told the newspaper.

"SuperSport cannot be a consideration so early in the negotiation process.

"We would hope that the SABC will be given first consideration because 90% of the people of this country do not have access to satellite dishes," he added.

In 2007, SuperSport won the contract to show live Premier Soccer League fixtures, leaving the SABC to pick up the scraps.

Zurich - Bafana Bafana have moved up to No 58 in the latest rankings released by football's governing body FIFA.

Bafana's November friendly has been confirmed, they are playing the USA at Cape Town Stadium on 17 November.

Chicago -The US Soccer Federation said on Friday that the Americans will play South Africa in a friendly on November 17 in Cape Town.

It will be the fourth trip to South Africa for the US in three years, following a November 2007 friendly at Johannesburg's Ellis Park, the 2009 Confederations Cup and this year's Soccer World Cup.

The US will be missing players involved in the MLS Cup final, scheduled for November 21 in Toronto. The Americans also could be without players in the Mexican playoffs, which open on November 20-21.

The Americans host Poland on October 9 at Chicago and Colombia three days later at Chester, Pennsylvania.

I'd love to see a win, but I think that we'll be lucky to see all our players make it to the match in a good condition. Strange things happen when playing in Africa.
 
And SABC stuffs up with the game not being showed.

Is there a live stream anywhere? I can't find anything. Not even live scores or something.
 
I hate the SABC so much right now. I'm trying to get a live stream going. So far the live score sites are saying it's still 0-0. Also Niger beat Egypt 1-0.
