The Banting/LCHF Thread

I have no medical education or experience with diabetes, but it sounds like the 75% of insulin is too much, hence your levels going too low. You may need to reduce your medication more aggressively - perhaps consult your GP and have your reduction expertly supervised?

I am checking my sugar levels regularly throughout the day. One shouldn't reduce the insulin very aggressively. I'm reducing it every 2nd day (as previously recommended by a GP).

What I want to know is what do I eat or drink to lift my sugar levels when I do get a low reading? Monday and today I made some hot Milo without any sugar. It kind of done the trick.

I am really not qualified enough to give an answer here. I have just read many reports of people going completely off their insulin meds after banting for a while

Hi guys, I am starting to have a serious problem with my sugar levels. I am a diabetic and am using insulin. I have been banting for about 10 weeks now and have lost 7kg. I have been adjusting (lowering) my insulin intake gradually. I am now using 75% of what I was using before I started on this new eating plan.

My problem is I have cut out almost all sugars and my sugar levels are dropping too low (to about 2 mmol) mainly between breakfast and lunchtime. What would be safe to eat to up my sugar level? For breakfast I usually have 1 or 2 boiled eggs about 8am. Then another boiled egg or 2, or leftover supper between 11 and 12.

type 1 or type 2 diabetes?

Quick question, a recent blood test showed that I have very high insulin levels (close to double the max) but my sugar was normal. My GP suggested that I lower carbs and sugar.

Anyone with similar issues on the banting diet?

Where would you guys suggest I start when researching the diet? There is a load of hits on google but Im not sure if they are all accurate/correct.

Thats a fantastic page for beginners and a quick overview. That will go into my list that I send to people if they ask about banting.

Also try http://realmealrevolution.com/faq and other info on this site.

He is right, sugar(and carbs) trigger insulin, and if you are IR ,like me, then it is very bad for you.

Be careful, if you decide to try banting don't go into it full tilt, Ease your body into it, I tried the full on Banting thing last year my sugar levels dropped dangerously low so i canned the banting thing, ( I also have high insulin problems) now trying a low carb, low sugar diet but not full banting as i need some starch and sugar in my diet otherwise I end up with Hypoglycemia, so try it but ease yourself into it would be my suggestion, don't cut out all sugar and all the carbs in one go.

Thank you! I do appreciate the help. Currently I try to stay away from food that started out as dough, except some low GI bread (still looking for rusks thats OK), and trying to reduce sugar intake (seriously battling to enjoy my coffee ATM ).

I went from drinking black coffee with too much sugar to drinking coffee with no sugar but too much cream :D

You might want to look into trying out some healthy (healthier?) sweeteners like stevia or xylitol if you're struggling to cut out the sugar. Personally I found it helped with the transitionary phase until my body got more sensitized to sweet things again (i.e. more things taste naturally sweet because you're not numbing your taste for sweetness with loads of added sugar).

Also, for those of you who buy grass-fed butter, Kerrygold 250g are R25.90 at Pick n Pay (mine was all sold out, conveniently)

I had a reading of 57 on the insulin test. Been on the diet now for about 3 months, works well with it but you need to be strict on your carb intake.

Im in the same boat, or was. High insulin on fasting blood tests with perfect blood glucose readings.

Since removing sugar from the diet and switching to low carb, my last fasting insulin test in March was 9, the threshold is 10.

A few years ago I was getting readings in the 50's and 60's :o

I made cauliflower mash last night and combined it with a hand full of biltong, I could eat this 24/7
I'm almost done with my 3rd week of banting, I did not weigh myself before I started, but I see im loosing cm by adjusting my belt, was on 2nd last notch am now on the 4th :)

well done. keep going!

what recipe did you use for the mash?

I don't know just thought up my own thing...
I boiled the blomkool till it was soft, drained the water, mashed it with a fork then threw it back into the pan and "flash fried" it in 2 table spoons of butter and a tea spoon of fresh chopped garlic until before it turned brown. Added black pepper, parmesan and cream cheese, while it cooled. Then threw in the biltong. Heaven

hehe Belt sizing is best. For me it's a constant daily reminder as I only do a weigh once a week. Had to actually splash on a new belt on the weekend, difference of 15cm between the two belts. The wife had our supplier put in additional holes in the old one but I started feeling bad when I got to the last one and it was now on the 12 hole! So new belt, new "measurement", starting at notch 2. Feels a bit depressing that the belt is now tight after I was used to it being loose but the fact that my pants would fall right off without a belt is impressive for me.

Trying to save on cloathes, pointless getting a new wardrobe while loosing lots of weight , rather adjust as much as I can, even if it starts looking ridiculous.

.. almost done with my 3rd week of banting ..
Welkom. 13 maande vir my en ek kyk nie terug nie.

Since I started banting, my self regulation prevented me from over eating. That was until I discovered banting chocolate mousse. :wtf:
There are tons of recipes, but the last one contained cream, egg whites, cocoa, xylitol. I just cannot stop.
