The Banting/LCHF Thread

What are your opinion about the Stellenbrau beers that are zero carb? The Craven Craft.

Hi, new member here. I have been reading on this forum for ages and just wanted to ask your opinion on this one: I have been doing LCHF for 3,5 years now. It started with no sugar, then no starches and the step to Banting was made quickly.
I don't cheat but I do eat starchy veggies or legumes or raisins etc when served in a dish. And I can't resist a few fries or some sweet potato. Also I taste tiny bits what my kids bake or eat to share in their experience. But haven't had a slice of toast or a spoon of rice.

I was wondering if any of you would ever consider stopping. Especially legumes and some grains surely should be beneficial? Oats? Quinoa? Rye bread? The occasional cracker?

I also have noticed fatigue in the past months which is new. So I really was wondering if it is time to reintroduce some carbs.

I lost 2 kg initially and gained them in the last year but have been stable. I didn't need to lose weight. I could lose I think by eliminating dairy. Last months my weight slowly creeps up.

Just wondering if this diet has reached its expiry date?

It all depends on your body and metabolism. I've also been on it for a number of years now and been losing roughly 45-25-15-10 so it definatley slows down. But there are a number of other benefits for me: sugar, blood pressure , good cholesterol etc. I would experiment and see how it goes, watching your scale and how you feel. Its not an exact science. Would I totally return to carbs? No but I would probably slide along more to the low carb side ( <150carbs /day ) vs my keto ( <25carbs ) per day strict regimen. I have already lightened up but keeping in mind, good healthish carbs vs junk.

So they are blatantly lying on their website and packaging?
Not saying that. There's no nutritional information from the label. So don't know the ingredients.

Just that a true beer can't have zero carbs. Less than 1g, sure. But never zero.

Stellenbrau was bought by Heineken, so one would think their claims on nutritional information would be correct...

Legally, they can claim zero carbs if the can contains a decimal of a gram of carbs. Low Carb books warn us of this and always say you should count it as 1 carb.

Castle Lite only has 2 carbs per bottle, so Stellenbrau is most likely between 0g and 1g per can/bottle, but not absolute zero

This would suit me soooo well. Does it kick you out of ketosis?

This what I do once every 7 days:

Bullet proof coffee for breakfast.
Skip lunch.
Start eating carbs at 3pm until 10pm.
I eat around 300 to 400 grams of carbs including sweets and any junk I've been craving.

By 10pm I'm out of Ketosis, but I'm back in Ketosis the next morning as verified by both blood testing and breath testing.

Quick check in/update. Started January last year at 109 kgs. Had a goal in mind - more size than weight. Reached that comfortably - size 32 Levi jeans (no stretch!) for the Guns n Roses concert. Weight was around 77 - 78 kgs. But from then on it was year end events, bike rally, quiet office (lame excuse) and Christmas/New Year. Weighed in on Monday at 88 kg. Loss for the year was 21 kgs, aiming to get to between 70 and 75 kgs. Need to get the mental side sorted, my biggest problem I have realised.

Coolio thanks. Saturday afternoons will be great.

Keep it to 7 hours of carbs max, and late afternoon & evening works best. For interest sake I do my tracking with ketonix breath meter & freestyle optium ß-Ketone blood strips.

Will do. Thanks for the tips.

Don't own any monitoring gear but the metallic taste in my mouth is a clear indication of ketosis. Will probably look into the blood meter and strips you mention just to confirm.

The blood strips are EXPENSIVE... R40 to R50 each locally or something ridiculous! I bought for cheap on ebay a few years ago.
