The biggest permanent LAN - PTAWUG

Bloem is probably not covered?

I am really interested in joining this, sounds awesome :)

Bravestart, plot your location on www.wug.za.net - there are a few okes in Bloem, think they have one accesspoint up at the moment. They havent yet learnt the value of promotion and advertising - getting the info out there :)

protz, luckily i will be using 300 free wifi minutes and will spend at least half of that on the ptawug irc this weekend :)

Thanks :) Will give it a bash I am currenlty plotting on google map, how do I work out height above ground?

Calculate 3m per Storey - If you live in a double storey house, it would be 6m, plus whatever length pole you intend on using. :p

Thanks Ryder, I don't think i am in within range though :(

I am to far south from the (DS) Tower and thats the closest 1 to me :'(

It seems that you are about 4.31kms away from the DS site, and LOS looks good (can't vouch for trees / buildings though) but the contours of the land look good.

4.31kms is perfectly manageable, and could be achieved with an old wire coat hanger almost :D

Afaik, our longest link currently (on 2.4ghz equipment) is +- 30kms :D

Ryder,

I really wanted to come to your get-together last week, but was not able to.

I really do want to pick up some of the gear, especially for our site in Jeppestown (the one for which I put up the photos).

Where and how can I get the gear? and who will help me erect it? Willing to pay for their time.

Gary, come chat to us in irc! It's our preferred form of communication. - We can arrange the hardware for good pricing, and can advise on howto install (its fun to do it yourself) but if you are not keen, someone may be available to offer some on-site assistance! :o

hehe... I have been in there, but now how do I go to the next level?

Where can I meet you to buy the gear? and how much should I bring with me?

Well, IRC is the best way to answer all of the various questions - plenty of them - that we'll need to ask etc, it may take a while in here, but we can try!

We have an account with a wifi supplier, and we have a chap in the channel that arranges to purchase the items for good prices. We'll need to determine which sites you can see (with guaranteed LOS) before we can recommend equipment (decision will be based on who you connect to, and what frequency that have "pointing" back at you - 2.4 / 5.8 etc"
