Hi guys quick question:

I got a B593u-91 with the Telkom trial and in the last year I have been using my Afrihost (MTN) sim in it and it works okay. I get 3G even though the SIM is LTE enabled but I am not too stressed about the speeds staying on 6-12Mbps. The thing is though that on some nights when the weather is wet the signal gets a lot weaker. I cannot move the router around too much, since I use the ethernet ports in the back.

The thing is I did not get little external antennas in the box and the old wifi ones I have lying around doesn't fit. I saw a couple of TP-Link TL-ANT2408C (http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TL-ANT2408C#over) at a local shop for a fair price and the connectors look the right size. But will they work? Will they boost my signal? And do I need to buy 2 or will one on one of the connectors suffice? If so which connector? I am sorry if this question has been answered before but this thread is long and I search through it and could not find a near enough answer.

Model number was posted here, possibly in this thread. It covers all SA operators. Not available locally yet, but it was couple months ago, so I think it is coming soon.
B593 is not a model I would recommend, as it has crippled firmware in the router part and also missing such small, but important things like Cell ID indicator.

Where I stay I could never get any of the wired connections like ISDN and ADSL lines so I have always been battling with cellular data. I never thought the day would dawn when my friend who has had ADSL from the beginning would sit in my house and envy my connection. I am really happy now!

I know just how you feel !
ADSL is the same at my exchange (012-991-xxxx) and at my distance from the exchange.
I still have ADSL, but the performance is pretty dismal by comparison (max 4Mbps, very shaky at that level). These days I only have 2Mbps ADSL and only use it as a back-up .
In actual fact ADSL is now less reliable than LTE for me, especially in bad weather. Bad copper, bad cables, bad junction boxes etc lead to frequent line-drops when it's windy or rainy.

Exactly my experience too! LTE is a lot better and more reliable. As soon as the wind blows, my ADSL drops out and only comes and goes and I have to reset my router to reconnect. Even worse when it rains as well. Despite having reported it several times.

Yup, I use DDNS on the B593 (and some other devices on my network).

I have only ever used the DDNS update function with dyndns.org and as far as I can tell, that's the only DDNS service it supports. Certainly on mine (the 's-601 sub-model) the DDNS pop-up only provides dyndns.org as an option :



The update agent on the B593 seems to work fine with dyndns - I've had no issues with it.

As far as I know, you can't do that, at least not on the 's-601 sub-model. There's no provision - that I've found, anyway - to override the DNS server addresses provided by the ISP when operating the B593 the conventional way, ie as an IP gateway with your ISP login details stored in the B593 itself.
There might be a way to do so when you're running PPPoE into the device, ie when your client PC has the login details. I haven't experimented much with that mode.

Just as a related aside (mild O/T warning) : When you want to use the UnoTelly DNS service (eg for Netflix or Hulu), you have the option of putting the UnoTelly server addresses into the client devices (like the PC you plan to watch Netflix on), or into an upstream device like an ADSL/LTE modem, or an intermediate router. Putting UnoTelly into an upstream device and using that device as a DNS proxy server seems like a good idea because then all downstream clients automatically get their DNS requests routed through UnoTelly.
This does work, however it has a downside : the UnoTelly DNS servers may not be as fast as the "normal" ones, and they may not get host updates as quickly as you'd like. The implications are:

1. Your everyday browsing can be significantly slower. A lot of the delay you experience in browsing the web is due to the time taken to resolve host addresses, so slow DNS can have a significant effect on your browsing experience.

2. If you also use a DDNS service, it can sometimes take quite a while for the UnoTelly DNS servers to become aware of an updated DDNS host address. I've had cases where it seemed to take quite a few hours for UnoTelly to pick up a host address change at dyndns.org. This can be quite annoying, particularly if you use UnoTelly's auto-IP-update feature, which actually requires the use of a DDNS service. I'm not sure if there are other DDNS providers that play better with UnoTelly.

So, back to your question, rodga : although you can't do the UnoTelly thing on the B593, given the above, you may want to think twice about doing it anyway.

Thank you for all the info on this thread. Went ahead and got myself a B593 601 yesterday from Sandton City Edgars, - there are now three left there.

Quickly setup last night. I get a weak TM LTE signal, download on TM about 20 mbps, upload around 2 mbps. I'll need to add external antennas.

Also tried using my Afrihost (MTN) LTE SIM in it, could not get it to work. Does not connect. What am I doing wrong, went through all the settings, cannot find anything relevant which would indicate to the modem it should now not receive/transmit on 2300 mhz... What am I missing?
