The Huawei B593 LTE discussion thread

This type of configuration isn't my forte to be honest. Let's hope one of the fundis on this forum responds quick enough.

thanks for the quick reply. I understand using service like dyn would make my life easier, but I should be possible by connecting to my external IP address, right? Do i need to do port forwarding even though the ftp is on the modem itself.
Correct, but slighthly more complicated. You need in essence:
1. External ddns service to translate requests to your current IP address.
2. Unrestricted APN to initiate connection from Internet. TM gives unrestricted by default, for other networks you have to apply. Otherwise requests will be blocked on their gateway servers.
3. Local configuration (on the router) similiar to unrestricted APN.

Ad.#3 How to do it? In my example, for B683 (it can be different or even not possible on your router - depends on firmware version).
1. Enable access to the internal FTP service from WAN interface. Settings -> Security -> ACL settings
2. Configure port forwarding (complicated), or simpler method available on B683: Enable ALG Settings -> Enable FTP ALG and save settings. (I can be wrong here. Maybe for internal FTP service this step is not required - <almost sure>).
3. Configure FTP server (password, etc.) as you would do for the LAN access.

Azimuth thanks for going to all the trouble getting this info in one place.

Due to your info I purchased the Huawei B593 and a Poynting antenna.

Was very happy with the quality that comes out of Poynting factory and choice of materials used.

Speed is insane from a normal 2 or 3 it now sits on 13 plus.

Its not LTE but it's flipping close, Vodacom lady said the SIM card has nothing to do with the LTE. LTE is hardware ?

Good stuff. :) For Vodacom that is that case - they can activate the LTE VAS on all 64K SIM cards and above. For MTN and Telkom Mobile, one has to request an LTE SIM card. MTN's SIM card is even branded as such. For Telkom Mobile, one needs a new-age "blue fish" SIM. The old black and white ones (8ta) don't work.

Thanks Azimuth, Here are a couple of pictures of the Poynting in place.....

I might need to pick your brain in a day or so.

I did paul_a , waiting for the next contract to start so I kept my self busy in the mean time.

Telkom line is on the wall and no longer 45 meter telephone cord to the ADSL router which is also now on
the wall, the LTE is in the large box and no moans from any one just need to get a LTE SIM card that will give me what they say they have in the area.

I wonder if I should have gone with Telkom and not the major Voda/ MTN brand SIM.

Really neat job buddy. Telkom seems to have better coverage and faster speeds... Also depends which model B593 unit you have you can use any network in the 601 model. * except Cell C *

Purchased this modem today (R1999 from Makro, 601 model) and I'm getting lightning quick speeds 16Mbps+ download on MTN/Afrihost with only 3G available. Quite curious to see what speeds I'll be getting on the Telkom Mobile network. Have to say I'm quite impressed with this router even though its on the expensive side of the spectrum.

@kamikazi & @Derrick cool, what area you in ? And what option did you opt for the outright cash purchase or did you sign up on a contract deal ?

Looks awesome Cosmic_Nomad who did the installation ?

Beautiful install, Cosmic_Nomad - well done!
Perhaps a little light on the surge-protection (?) and mast-earthing ;) , but very, very neat.

I'm in Somerset West, WC. Didn't realise 3G were capable of these kind of speeds! Was getting significantly less speed with my previous 3G modem + router. Haven't even attached the antenna's yet.

OK, without reading all 37 pages of this thread, does anyone know where I can get the latest firmware for the B593s-601 Huawei router?

I am having some DHCP issues on my home network and hoping the firmware might fix the issue.

My Setup:

Huawei B593s-601 LTE wired to Trendnet TEW638APB AP

Using MACBOOK Pro, Air, Mini ...and more

When connecting to B593 all ok, when connecting to AP cannot obtain IP. It was working yesterday. This is now my 2nd AP as my new TP-Link had the same issue.

DHCP off on AP, B593 DHCP on with ip range 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.100. IP of AP 192.168.1.2, subnet 255.255.255.0, Gateway 192.168.1.1, WEP security

If I manually configure IP on Mac to AP wifi, disable wifi and enable again it connects, as soon as I DHCP IP on Mac, no connection

I'm so frustrated.

Did you disable WiFi on B593? Default is on.
What happens if you disable DHCP on B593 and enable on AP?

I disabled the Wifi, but my AP still worked with the B593 Wifi on.
If I disable DHCP the AP bombs out. If you want the AP to take over DHCP duties on your local network then use bridging.

Telkom 60 + 60 the best deal for large amounts of bandwidth? Neotel uncapped any good? (would it work with 601 model?)

Thanks Azimuth, Here are a couple of pictures of the Poynting in place.....

As others have said, great job on the install. What really caught my eye is that you braced your mast.

I also see you have your B593 in an enclosure which I don't believe anyone has done so far. Would you mind switching to internal antennas and giving us signal readings compared to the outdoor antennas?
