The Huawei B593 LTE discussion thread

OK, without reading all 37 pages of this thread, does anyone know where I can get the latest firmware for the B593s-601 Huawei router?

I am having some DHCP issues on my home network and hoping the firmware might fix the issue.

Unfortunately since the B593 launched there haven't been any firmware updates, only new sub-models. The -601 finally got some new firmware that isn't available to the other sub-models. (Factory loaded, not a download)
 
Can anyone tell me why is this thread under the "Mobile" section. Is the Fixed portion of Broadband discussion not a better place for this. Or are you all running you B593's off cigarette lighter adapters or 12V gel batteries to make it mobile.?

Same goes for Antenna discussions, why here in Mobile forum.

Just maybe it might have something to do with not needing a R166/month line for it to work?....

Hi guys. I have the B593-601 modem, using TM LTE. I have predominantly Apple devices connecting to it. Sometimes the client devices are connected to the wifi, router connected to the internet, but the devices do not get to the internet. I have to either disconnect and re-connect the devices or reboot the router.

Anyone else having stability issues?


Wi-Fi is set to Channel 1, security WPA-PSK2 encrypted with no access MAC access control enabled. Network mode is 4G only, always on.

Firmware version V200R001B180D20SP00C00

Good shot! If you read this section you will notice that it was suggested solution for B593 by Azimuth. ;)
 
Must be the only store in SA. I'm at my Telkom store right now and it's still R2,649.00 with 5GB.

OK ......I'm going back there monday to get an extra sim linked if you want me to grab & ship i can probably organise that?
It wasn't advertised at that price,i just asked & that's what she said & charged me.
I can only do monday, after then i'm off to sea for a while,so if you want speak.

I'm looking to get this router for my sister to upgrade her really old crappy 3g dongle. I see you guys getting some pretty amazing speeds out of this router but I also see some of you are using dedicated outdoor antenna that cost way more than I want to spend. My question is will we see a decent improvement from 3g? I did my research and there are no dead zones anywhere near where she lives and there is a tower quite close by. What sort of speeds should I expect from this thing while using the standard antenna?

Without knowing the conditions you'll be using the modem under, it's hard to give a definitive answer. It depends very much on the strength and quality of the LTE signal from the base station, the network operator, the amount of contention/congestion, and the ISP your sister will be using.

That said, if the station that is "close by" carries LTE equipment from the Network Operator you'll be using (Vodacom, MTN or Telkom Mobile), then chances are good that you'll get significantly faster speeds with LTE than with 3G. If I were to make a very broad generalisation, I would say that with 3G you are likely to be below 20Mbps whereas with LTE you have the possibility to get 30-50 Mbps or even as high as 80-90Mbps. But that depends on many other factors, too.

Bear in mind that to get the full benefit of LTE performance, the B593 has to have access to two antennas - either the two built into the B593, the two external "whips" supplied with the B593, a dual-element external antenna, or a dual-antenna array.

As regards antennas, I think it is true to say that outdoor external antennas are only crucial if you live in an area of particularly poor signal. If you have reasonable signal anyway, you will probably do fine with just the B593's internal antennas - they're actually excellent. Personally I do think that even the most basic outdoor external antenna system will generally give you a more stable and probably slightly faster connection.

To give you some idea of performance, I live in a built-up area with reasonable 3G and 4G presence by Vodacom, MTN and Telkom. Using the B593's built-in antenna(s), I would generally get around 10-15Mbps in 3G mode. In LTE mode, I routinely see 20-30Mbps with no particular difficulty. Switching to a highly-directional LTE antenna array gets me into the high 70's or even low 80's.

If you have some time, have a look through the Antenna installation and alignment thread. If you have limited time, have a look at the scatter diagram in this post to get some idea of the spread of people's LTE results so far.
You will notice that many of the results in the 30-50Mbps range were obtained with the B593's built-in antennas. There are also some excellent results in the 70-80 range (eg Biggles190) obtained in areas of good signal using just a simple dual-polarised external antenna costing about R600.

You don't say whether your sister needs mobile connectivity or whether this will be an essentially fixed installation - the B593 is intended for the latter. For a mobile installation, an LTE USB dongle would obviously be better suited.

Thanks for all the info. My sister rents out an apartment on the 4th floor of a complex that doesn't offer fixed broadband, this also means external antenna are a no go. This is why I was wondering about the performance you can get from the standard antenna. This would be a fixed installation, once the router is in place she wouldn't move it around. Aside from moving the router near to a window/room that faces the tower's direction is there anything else I can do to get the best results?

She has a contract with TM already and I was told by the TM reps in the shop that to use LTE you just have to pop the sim from the dongle into the LTE router and your internet becomes a little better. Honestly I'm not looking for earth shattering speeds, just want to upgrade her internet from being acceptable for browsing to something vaguely resembling adsl.
