PwnageTool and QuickPwn for 2.1 Firmware

PwnageTool and QuickPwn for 2.1 Firmware Released

Some of the popular press and blogs have been backing the opposition. :-)

While criticism and competition is fine it should be reported correctly, with all the facts. and certainly minus the FUD. Do you guys think we are “less and less relevant with each passing day” ? We don’t think so, and we certainly prefer our hacks to theirs. ;-) Though even if the world deems us irrelevant, the iPhone family of devices is still fun to hack!

By the way we figured out a way to combat iTunes 8 without patches…and we’re waiting to see what Apple tries next. But we think they might want to rethink their priorities. They probably won’t though, and so we get back to the “cat and mouse” game between Apple and the Dev Team and third-party communities.

Here are the new versions of PwnageTool and QuickPwn that support the 2.1 firmware. And as we just mentioned, iTunes was not harmed in the process ;-) no patching was required:

Just a quick update for you guys:

Everything running very smooth on 2.1 ;) I got an error in DFU mode while loading my Custom Firmware, so I just restored normally in iTunes 8.

Wonderful! Thanks guys. Do I need the 2.1 firmware as well? Or do I just update and pwnage?

I'm loving it so far... Reception for some reason is better, the installation process of all my 15 apps went quicker... My backup went quick quick, and so did my restore from 2.0.2 ;)

Will post more when I get more use out of it today...

hey guys, a mate of mine is considering getting an 3g iphone from the US. problem is that i've been out of the loop of things since mine got stolen, so i have no idea what the answer to his question would be.
has asked whether, once the 3g iphone is released in SA, you would still need to unlock it in order to use it in SA after having updated its latest firmware? basically, would a firmware update thats released after the SA release open the iphone for use on SA networks?
...i know what im trying to ask but im not sure if im wording it right.

To early to say... depends on what options Vodacom offers, if they offer to sell unlocked iPhones then any iPhone using a Vodacom simcard could be unlocked with iTunes but I cant confirm this.

Is (has) anyone used the quickpwn option? I am feeling lazy and would rather just update from iTunes and then quickpwn to get jailbreak back. Cydia mentions your community apps will get wiped. Thoughts suggestion?

I used Quickpwn, don't have any 3rd party apps so can't comment on that but it will just activate, jailbreak your iPhone and add Cydia + Installer.

I did a full 2.1 restore in DFU mode though so my iPhone was clean to start with.

Ok, I'm back here, so add to the thread postcount.
And wanna make sure of the latest method.

I have version 1.4, using MTN, have XP and Leopard.

When the new winpwn is out I think I will give this a go and see what happens. Worst case I have to do a full restore :)

The link to the iClarified site works great and my 2G phone is now updated and good to go. Thanks to all for the info on the converter as well.:p

How to do a DFU Restore

Some users are still not able to tell the difference between DFU(device firmware upgrade) and normal restore mode. Normal restore mode is when you have the iTunes icon and cable showing and iTunes will request to update or restore your phone whereas DFU mode does not have any icons displaying since the OS has not loaded and the only way you know you have entered DFU is when iTunes prompts for a firmware restore. DFU is necessary when you are unable to do a normal restore with iTunes(error messages) or you have restore procedure fail.

Here's how to enter DFU mode:
1. Connect iPhone to Mac/PC - keep iTunes open
2. Hold down power and home button
3. Wait until red slider appears to shut down iPhone, keep holding down the buttons, count 4-5 seconds (while iPhone shuts down)
4. Release power-button, keep home button pressed(There should be no Apple logo! If it appears you've waited too long to release the powerbutton and need to try again)
5. Wait 5-10 seconds - iTunes should then prompt that there's an iPhone connected in "restore mode"

Another tip, if your iPhone fails to respond or stuck in restore mode after a failed restore you can force it to reset.(don't attempt this unless it's really necessary)

Soft reset:
Hold home and power button for a few seconds until it sends a reset single.

As far as I know, iTunes 8 gives an error when in DFU mode. (Well that's what happened to me, and I read it on Hackint0sh) So in order to restore a Custom Firmware you do the normally. (Alt+Restore)

So, can I guess that WinPwn will work the same as Pwnage? Do we not put it in DFU, but just click Shift Restore and select the new Custom Firmware? Why would they change it?

Apple introduced some changes to iTunes 8 to try and detect custom firmwares. The dev team apparently already have a work-around for this.
