The iPhone Tips/Tricks/Apps thread

'Those' apps from 'those' kind of forums.. ;)

Bru, it keeps on giving errors. SSHing to the phone perfectly normal, changing permissions to 775 as i'm told. Transfer the XXX.app file into /Applications like it instructs and it gives an error, "Cannot open this application"... Will try other methods...

Maybe ur symlink is pointing to the wrong applications folder..

Should be pointing to /var/stash/Applications

Try manually copying the .app files into there.. Make sure ur checking the "Set group, ownership and permissions recursively"checkbox in WinSCP so it sets 775 permissions for all subfolders and files. Then reboot.. Usually works for me.. PM me if u need more help

I know this is the iphone tips thread, but where are you guys purchasing the iphone 2g from? I mean the cheapest most reliable site. Thanks

Using a Mac, therefore don't use WinSCP... ****e, I was using /Applications folder directly, not var/stash/Applications.

Will check it out when I get home... Hopefully it works, have you noticed how most of the links to RS have been removed for 'illegal' reasons?

Laters...

Haha yeah thats why u wont find many of RS anymore :p

The /Applications folder is usually just a symbolink link which links to the /var/stash/Applications folder.. So if ur symlink is correct, ur probably doing it right..

How are you setting permissions? Make sure ur doing it recursively (i.e. chmod -r 775 xxxxx).

Check ur PM's

Yip using Transmit to set the folder at 775...

Shot for the help my brother - will get back to you later tonight when i have more time to mess around with the .ipa method.

Got mine from USA a while back... Not sure where u can find them here in SA.. Ask around, check the Classifieds, google it.. Ur bound to find one ;)

I dont mind getting it from the an overseas site, but i just dont know what sites are reliable. So i'm looking for a site that someone here has bought from.

The local prices are just ridiculous, i'd rather fly overseas, get one myself and have a holiday while i'm at it.

Speak to d0b33. He ordered one from USA using Google Checkout. Should be able to help you out

Hi guys,

Just need some info as to how you guys have gone about the upgrade.
I read on BigBoss' forum his exact steps, which seems pretty straightforward (WinPwn btw).
But this goes back to the discussion earlier on the backup/restore. Did any of you restore? Or just re-sync all your contacts etc?

Also, it says if you have pwned previsouly, you might not even have to put it in DFU mode. What did you experience?

Oh, and you guys are using fw2.01, right and iTunes 7.7.1?

Thx

Yes.

Regarding your other questions.

I always put my iPhone in DFU and when it asks me if my phone has been pwned before, i always say no (even though it has). Allows for a more thorough upgrade apparently..

I used PwnageTool for Mac, but you can use WinPwn as well.. iClarified's guides are usually quite good

http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1572

Before my upgrade, i SSH'd into the phone to the /var/mobile/Library folder and copied the following folders:

-AddressBook
-Notes
-Safari
-SMS
-Calender
-CallHistory

I also backed up custom ringtones, DCIM folder (from /var/mobile/media including the .MISC folder -VERY IMPORTANT- otherwise when you transfer the photos back to your phone, there will be no thumnails, instead, white thumbnails)

After upgrade, SSH back into the phone and copy the backed up files accross.. Voila. Works perfectly

VERY IMPORTANT VITAL LAST STEP: Make sure to set correct ownership after you restore manually backed up files (such as these)

To do this, download Putty, and login to the iPhone (username: root , password:alpine), and type the following command:

chown -R mobile /var/mobile/

This will prevent any ownership problems.. It is vital you do this otherwise you WILL have problems at some stage..

Enjoy

@fxit - thx. Will see if I can get it done tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes.

Thx

I didn't go into that detail with regards to my backup.

I simply backed up my iPhone in iTunes and restored after the FW restore. Everything is working perfect, and I have all my info (what fxit mentioned above).

Give it a shot and let us know...

If you going to go with fxit route, maybe you should do a backup in iTunes just in incase something goes wrong...

Thx, will do that. Should I use iBackup to do the others,or just copy in WinScp?

Also, what are the major issues / irritations you guys have experienced, if any. I have read a few comments on WiFi not working, and a lot of complaints about Cydia giving trouble. Also AppStore apps and their synching. Opinions?
And finally, what are good apps to get so far?
