The iPhone Tips/Tricks/Apps thread

Another dumb question: Does the A-gps use any bandwidth if you are not using a gps application? I don't think so, but have been proven wrong on many a times

Are you sure you get 2 days of batt life?
I only get 1 day (with browsing on edge! That too for approximately 1&half hr a day! + calls (average about half an hr)
Is here some thing wrong with my batery? If so how do I sort it out?

With phonecalls and browsing during the day, 3G OFF, WIFI OFF I use up about 80% of my battery in one day...

The biggest downfall of the iPhone for me is the battery life...

A few things I do that help increase battery life:

Decrease screen brightness to like 25% or less.
Turn of 3G
Auto-Lock to 1 minute
Turn off Wifi, Bluetooth if you not using it.

All of this can be done in SBSettings...

I have to say with 3G off, and auto lock after 1 min, I get about 3 days, about the same I got with my se p1i, so I am happy with it

Weird..

Where did you find this solution?

I will try do some research on your problem, but if you want to try that in the meantime, See the "How to SSH over USB " here, and run the Putty instead of filebrowser in iPhoneTunnel Suite

When in Putty, type 'alpine' as the password (there will be no feedback as you type the password in Putty)

Then:

Don't know what that does though to be honest.

Could you explain your problem a bit more please so I can understand it a bit more?

Apologies for taking so long to reply - I found that solution on a forum where they discuss the iPhone - macforums or something like that. In the meanwhile, I have also read there that it seems to be a problem that the phone 'thinks' you have your earphones plugged in - something I have never done with the phone, but I gave it a try, plugged earphones in and removed them again, now the speaker problem seems to be resolved.

In the meanwhile my phone stopped ringing. Only after long research on the net did I discover that little button on the top left hand side puts the phone in silent mode and I must have had that turned on by mistake.

Another problem that popped up (reason why I took so long to pay attention to this problem) is that my battery wouldn't charge. I ran it down to about 10% and then popped it into the docker to charge. It made that little ting that says it's connected, but the battery stayed low. Researched that all over the show and that also seems to be a common problem - you need to restart your phone after what you deem is a long enough charge time and it will show the battery as full again. These little problems are driving me insane, this phone is supposed to be 'good'.

Something completely different now - this thread is so long and so diverse and so very helpful, could it please be sorted under sub-topics so that we can find relative information quickly and easily. I've sat here for hours reading through all the posts and they are so informative, but it took me days to find the info on how to upgrade my phone from 1.1.1 to whatever it is now and now I'm still lost. I don't want to lose my contacts when I upgrade and I cannot sync contacts with my AppleMac. At least, I don't know how to. Should have an age restriction on this dang phone, I cannot keep up with all the technical stuff.

Thanks for all your help :)

:D

My personal method (you havent jailbroken yet i take it so this will not work yet. P.S. another reason to jailbreak ;) ):

1) Change to the list view in iTunes

2) Right click the song in your iTunes library that you want to add as a ringtone, click convert to AAC / "Create AAC Version"

3) Right click the newly converted song and click show in Windows Explorer.

4) Rename the track to <name>.m4r.

5) Transfer via SSH to the /Library/Ringtones folder

For non-jailbreak method, see here and here . Must be 30/40 secs long (instructions all there though)

Enjoy and good luck!

This has never worked for me - get it up to the point where it appears in the ringtone library, but there's no bell icon and when I sync, it doesn't move across to the phone. Is it because I'm on 1.1.1 software?

yesterday I say xgps, according to the log on cydia, its going to be a voice prompt turn by turn gps app (busy with development), tested it yesterday and with the iphone gps it works like a charm (maps are still a problem as they do not have expensive mapping software, the need to resort to google maps)

Maybe I'm missing something here, cause xgps isn't working for me. Even with the new version. When you say it works like a charm, what exactly works? Does it give you turn by turn navigation? It doesn't with me. Does it give you directions to a location? Doesn't with me. You can basically open the maps, same as with Google Maps, and it will give you your location based on your gps. But that's not what a GPS app is supposed to do?

The turn by turn based option comes with the new (long overdue) version. Its one of the only gps version that I can use offline without an active 3g/wifi connection, as you can download the maps to your phone

The new version came out yesterday, turn by turn still doesn't work.

Still trying to figure out how you use it? Do you just want to see where you are, or what else are you doing with it?

Did it? Don't even know about that, they said turn by turn would be enabled, so until I get my grubby little hands on it, won't be able to say. Currently I am wqaiting for the promised turn by turn using the new google maps (well that was their promise).

What time did they post the upgrade? I checked last night at 7 and xgps was not part of the upgrades

maybe consider giving the phone to someone who'd appreciate it??

you have to have downloaded maps for turn by turn to work

also think it might be dependent on google maps' directions, which there are none of for SA as yet...

still downloading maps myself, want to see if you actually do need directions or if they're calculated by the app

well late to the party but got my iPhone today :) busy downloading 250mb of updates....

The phone was a Christmas present in 2007. At R8000 it's a bit of an expensive give-away. (Nobody knew back then that you had to be a helicopter pilot to operate it.)

I have a R260 Nokia as a standby (chuckles) and it works for the basic 'get-hold-of-Mommy-when-there's-a-crisis' situation.
