The iPhone Tips/Tricks/Apps thread

I have just spoken to a brain surgeon by the name of Sonny (or is it Sunny?) who works as a Vodacom call agent. I guess the thrill of being able to lie to people on a daily basis holds more appeal than being up to your elbows in frontal lobes but I digress...

He told me that the Version 3.0 of the Apple iPhone software does NOT support either MMS or tethering, but that the next verison will. I told him that, with respect, he was talking crap. He then countered with 'We've received offical notice from Apple'.

Faced with the prospect of dealing with bare faced lies I mentioned that he might want to get internet access because I'd be posting this on this forum and hung up.

The reason behind this is that MOST (not all) call centre agents actually have no clue what is going on, and they rely on a knowledge base of information they can search on for your problem. If they cant find it there, it doesn't exist.

I don't get how PUSH can be free, won't it add significant load on the network?

Remember the original deal was between Vodafone and Apple, not Vodacom and Apple. We only got lucky cos Vodacom belongs to Vodafone.

My MMS is working, so I'm not so fussed about the tethering....but will still do the update when it becomes available in August.

Happy days.

I'd say that Vodacom got lucky, not us. Can you imagine the stink that would have arisen had the MMS not worked? Vodacom were asleep on this one.

I'd add a bit more to my earlier statement. It seems that the brain surgeon did have a piece of paper from Apple saying that his network didn't work and that it needed to be upgraded. Of course he then tried to make out that the problem was with our phones.

An aside - the marketing manager for Vodacom in Gauteng seems to be quite convinced that MMS and tethering do work. Reminds me of some work I was doing at the Swaziland telco - the MD was full of praise about this wonderful software that the network engineers could use to find faults. When I went to engineering they told me that they didn't have it but had included in their budget for next year. Some people read the marketing material a lot quicker than others read the installation manuals.

Guys, you're gonna LOOOOOVE this. I just installed the new BeejiveIM messenger with PUSH support and it works like a charm. I can go into the app. set my MSN status as 'Online', then exit the app. When someone sends me a message on MSN the PUSH notification pops up and I can just click 'view' and continue the conversation in Beejive......this is AWESOME, even better than multitasking (which keeps the connection open, kills battery life and uses vast amounts of data unnecessarily)

It is never their problem is it??

They need to get this huge pile of excess stock sold somehow??
:D

yup, that was all in the published features...

i'm still waiting for meebo or im+, i want skype voip calls as well... grrr!

can i ask you to test something in beejive for me though? they support facebook chat, do they also give push notification on facebook messages, (not chat messages, the send message thing in facebook itself)

you guys think they hacked exchange push to enable push notifications? meaning they just use a modified exchange active sync protocol to accomplish push? i'm thinking that an app that uses push, has to have a live running component on a server somewhere that notifies the push server to message the client/phone...

Roland, I just tested, you get push notification for Facebook CHAT messages, but no push notification for the normal 'email' type messages (which makes sense since the chat gateway is something completely different). But to get notifications on the Facebook 'email' messages I just make use of Vodacom's sms service. It works pretty well.

didn't know about that one, thanx.... i guess with skype app beejive would be a cool addition... >roland considers the possibilities....<

Hogwash response from vodacom, yet again...

Hello RolandTheron,

I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience that you may have experienced.

Although the new iPhone OS is available, there are features we currently do not provide support for, example: MMS, Tethering (Handset as a Modem) and Visual Voicemail. Some of these new functions are included with along with many others on the new OS but Vodacom SA along with a number of others, for example AT&T in the USA are not authorized to offer these as yet, nor are we able to provide support to clients who download the new OS. Additional information may be found at the link supplied.

Kind Regards
Deon Andrews

they honestly think we believe this cr@p? "AT&T in the USA are not authorized"?? BULL!!!! AT&T themselves refuse to offer said services due to concerns of overloading their network, service offerings are at the discretion of the network provider, NOT APPLE

here's a hint genius: submit your carrier settings information (you know, iphone apn, mms apn and mms configuration settings etc??) to apple, who will in turn build the correct carrier settings update and publish it through iTunes

That... and: Engadget is hardly an official source of information.
Imagine a client comes to you with an issue about work you did and you forward them an entry from some geek blog that explains the situation as it suits your bias... seriously: WTF is that?

ALSO: the fact that other carriers are not supporting it is as about as good an argument as : yea but other other carriers are!

Vo-da-com: (concentrate now) We dont care what other carriers are doing. We dont pay money to other carriers. What concerns us that you support the device you sold us (and that we continue to pay for) by ensuring that all of its capabilities are provided for server-side, period.

The fact that AT&T does whatever AT&T does is of ZERO effing concern to us!
Your argument is the same as Goverment telling us that we should live with crime in SA because "other countries also have crime." Seriously: screw you.

Well it is vodacom, the same company that tried to convince me that my iphone will be locked as soon as I put an mtn sim card in it

Data detectors in Iphone 3.0 Mail

Hahahahahaha

Can't believe this works

http://www.xsellize.com/showthread.php?t=46043

Tested it myself.

Send a mail to yourself with your address in, when you open it on the iphone, the address is a link to maps, and it pinpoints the location (well that is if it finds it)

lol

oh well... i'm going to ask you guys to help petition here, i've submitted a complaint to news24 to have the situation investigated, perhaps some publicity will make them wake up

be sure to mention that apple support explicitly states the carrier is responsible for offering the mms and tethering features, apple merely offers the channel for deploying the correct settings (iTunes) as supplied by the carrier

perhaps enough voices there will get news24 to do an article... get clicking guys... letter to the editor should do it

Hi Guys

Wow, this thread is starting to get huge.:D and I am not helping matters either.

I have a 3g iphone and am on MTN, I recently updated to the new 3.0 OS. I have however never tried a Jailbreak, am I missing out by not doing this?

I am sure its somewhere in this thread but could someone give me the best way to Jailbreak and what I can do after I jailbreak. Is it safe to do this, can I go back to the original settings at a later stage.

Any info would be great

Thanx Guys

Its 100% safe, and you can always go back. Do you have to jailbreak, if you are happy with everything on the iphone as is, then nope you dont have to, by jailbreaking, you just open the door to more apps out there.

I can't live without my jailbreak iphone, those 3 days of no sbsettings was torture for me.

Hi Gothan

Thanks for the quick reply. I am pretty happy with the phone but would love more apps. I see that you can get much better apps without paying for them :) as well. I am pretty bored with the free nasty apps on itunes.

Any info I should know on how to get this done. I have had a look on iClarifieds website and have downloaded the ipsw file and redsnow, is this correct, and should I follow their instructions?

Thanks

Yip, iClarified is the best tutor you can find on "freeing" your iphone, just backup your phone before you start, and if you want, then you can easily just rollback
