:) Great. Loving the push GMail now.. Never really used my GMail account on my iPhone before.. Figured why not now :)

Battery life was already pretty poor I must say... Even before push was enabled for Ping and other apps.

But oh well..

I've noticed that the ActiveSync connection to Gmail is quite a bit slower than the default IMAP implementation on the iPhone (which is still not exactly set up the way Google wants it to be), however it's a price I'm willing to pay for pushed mails :D

Isn't there push email functionality straight on the iPhone OS?

On mine I just added in my gmail account and enabled push.

Yes, but not for Gmail.

The default IMAP implementation of Gmail is fetch-only. That's why we have to use ActiveSync until IMAP IDLE is enabled for Gmail by Apple.

So if I understand correctly you are saying that I can put in my account on my iPhone and enable push email, but it still wont work properly?

Gmail uses the fetch schedule, even if push is enabled, if you did not create the connection via ActiveSync. The default Gmail configuration (if you set it up by clicking on the Gmail logo when adding a new mail account) is IMAP-based with no push support (IMAP IDLE). Yahoo Mail and MobileMe have built-in push support on the iPhone.

Fuggin iPhone!!!

I got a girl (HOT) trying to send me an MMS (a REAL nice MMS) (She's on MTN) and I'm not getting it..

I can send and receive MMS from Vodacom to Vodacom ever since installing the setting on Pg1. but this not being able to receive from MTN is pissing me off RIGHT now..

HAHAHAHAHAHA ouch! I bet you Vodacom is behind this "blocking" ..

Would say tell her to send it on MXit, but the current version of MXit for the iPhone also does not support receiving files :/

Tell her to send it on MXit and get MXit PC quick :)

Or wait.. got a better idea.. gimme her no. and let me try receive the file :)

It must be Vodacom cause I am on MTN & sending mms recieving works like a charm. I still cankot get a delivery report on my mms mesages  iPhonedelevery from Cydia does not support mms it seems

Actually push is now enabled for gmail, when you setup an account for calendar and contacts sync, you can now also select mail, started about two months ago.

But I hate my battery life on push functionality so I do it old school, fetch every hour

The iPhone doesn't support Push for GMail yet as MobileMe does... You are probably confused with Google Sync. This is setting up a Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync Protocol. This works well. OR you can use an app such as GPush (there are another 2 I think) that will push notifications to your mobile every time you receive an email in your Inbox. I use GPush as I notice that I get notified earlier than the ActiveSync setup...

Just tried GPush but it didn't seem to work first time..

Think you can only use it for one account at a time though also.. Not sure.

Anyone got it working?

EDIT: Just got MailNotifier. Also doesn't seem to work?

Gpush definately works, was buggy the first two weeks after realease, but been fine for ages now

Indeed. Even though Gmail supports push via the IMAP IDLE command, the iPhone does not, that is why it's impossible to have push Gmail on the iPhone with the IMAP implementation.

Google Sync, on the other hand, uses ActiveSync and supports true push Gmail as well as synchronizing calendars and contacts. I think Gothan used ActiveSync (Google Sync), as that's the only way of getting true push with Gmail (until Apple decides to add IMAP IDLE support for Gmail) and it enables syncing of calendars and contacts as well.

It's quite simple:
Push Gmail via IMAP - enabled but not supported by the iPhone, therefore it defaults to fetch
Push Gmail via Google Sync (ActiveSync) - enabled and supported on the iPhone

So if you want push Gmail on your iPhone, don't click on the Gmail button when adding a new mail account ;)
