Just a quick question for those that have Gmail enabled as a push service: Do you get new mail notifications when your phone's been in standby for, say, 10 minutes or more?

Seeing as I don't have a data package yet and do everything via WiFi at the moment I don't get new mail notifications on standby as the WiFi is switched off for battery-saving purposes. Just want to know whether the connection is kept alive via cellular data (which would imply the heartbeat also gets sent via cellular data).

Hey guys.

I got my iPhone 3GS this week, been having loads of fun. I do have one question at this stage. What / which / where can I find some decent battery life saving tips. I am smoking this battery, and I think I could make some changes to save the life more during the day.

I am already using the brightness on very low. 3G disabled when I don't use it.

What else?

Thanks!

Things that chow your battery:
1) Push Notification
2) Location Services
3) 3G Connection

I so wish they could better the push notification, cause I go through a full charge in about 8 hours with all my push clients enabled (IM+, BoxCar, Mail and ToDo)

And if I buy swirly MMS am I guaranteed of receiving mms from all providers..?

Also being able to send to all?

Tell her you will NOT accept a low quality/low res picture of her tits! She must email you a high quality pic ;) :p You can always purchase SwirlyMMS you know...

The iPhone doesn't support Push for GMail yet as MobileMe does... You are probably confused with Google Sync. This is setting up a Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync Protocol. This works well. OR you can use an app such as GPush (there are another 2 I think) that will push notifications to your mobile every time you receive an email in your Inbox. I use GPush as I notice that I get notified earlier than the ActiveSync setup...

From personal experience i can say the following:

I have 3G enabled ALL the time. And I still get 2 days. Whether I disable it or not, I get the same.

I have location services enabled most the time. And I still get 1.5-2 days.

Wireless has an impact but also about 1.5 days.

I do not use any push notifications as all. They just bug the crap outta me. Nice feature but no thanks

You should get grip, then push notifications are the best

Make sure you disable IMAP on your Gmail account via the web interface, otherwise you will get two new mail notifications for each new mail (once for Inbox/(insert-label-name-here) and once for All Mail). If IMAP is disabled only Inbox (or whichever label you specify) is pushed.

why do you get two notifications? you just delete the old gmail account off the phone and use the exchange account only?

Fuggin iPhone!!!

I got a girl (HOT) trying to send me an MMS (a REAL nice MMS) (She's on MTN) and I'm not getting it..

I can send and receive MMS from Vodacom to Vodacom ever since installing the setting on Pg1. but this not being able to receive from MTN is pissing me off RIGHT now..

...he means hot boy....

As I said, it shows as an unread message in two labels (Inbox and All Mail) if IMAP is enabled server-side and you use ActiveSync to push, resulting in the notification sound being played twice.

Try charging if mains power - for some reason I (and other members forum too) get much improved battery ife off a mains charge.

I'm a light user, and average 4 ~ 5 days inbetween charges.

phone's still new, you're playing with it too much, biggest battery drain is phone not being in sleep mode, commodity will wear off, phone battery life will do better :)

just don't enable push for both? enable push for inbox folder only, and set fetch to manual, that way, it will only fetch all mail if you actually open it, access mail via inbox, which is the iphone default

the settings are configured like this by default, so you must have gone and added all mail to the folders to push option, your bad, not google/iphone's.... lol

this was only the case in 3.0, no longer an issue

I did not. I did some research on the matter, Inbox is pushed resulting in an update call via IMAP which synchronizes all the labels as well. If IMAP is disabled server-side Inbox is pushed and the labels are updated manually (by viewing them).

No one else has the issue
