The official running thread™

Impressive! *doffs cap* Must be tough to put in all that effort and expense to get ready for the 100km and then have to bail. A mate of mine also had to bail about 40km in with stomach issues. Definitely looking forward to it though. Will be without a doubt the toughest thing I'll have ever done.
thanks, I made a rookie mistake pushing too hard up Suther Peak (suffer peak), the fact I was overtaking other runners should've been a warning. If you do UTCT and in Cape Town, spend as much time on the route training as possible. Things like hitting Platties with at least 20k in the legs to simulate race day. Too many people start with Kloof Corner and Platties at the start of a run but for the 65k and 100k, you've already done 23k when you start Platties.

I porked my route a bit this morning xD I thought there was a dog in the road and mindlessly ran that direction to see instead of turning. Anyway...

I didn't go last night or this morning, thought it was too cold. How old are you if you don't mind me asking? perhaps I can try keeping up with you as a motivation.

29, that said, i'm not that sure age makes too much a difference :p

That's a good time. I'm looking at around 1:20 for my first 10k. Still haven't decided which one to do yet. Will most probably be 1000 Hills Trail Run in a few months time.

Have you done trail running before? Much more or a beast than normal road but scenery and terrain is awesome. My 10k pb for road is 1h and a few secs and trail is like 1h20-30ish (cant remember exactly), maybe its just me but I find road easier, less rocks and stuff to look out for unless you running vaal marathon, the potholes are just insane there LOL.

Times are coming down nicely.

Havent been running or training much the past few months, skipped many parkruns and just haven't had any motivation to train or run since the Vaal 21k. Getting back to it from tomorrow, got a whole 30 day action plan. Starting intermittent fasting as well mainly for the health benefits but im sure il drop the 3-4 kilos I put on over December and just haven't managed to shed LOL. Will do Rietvlei or Victoria lake parkrun Saturday and Sunday we pre-entered for the Colgate 15k race, just hoping my foot pain stays away, I have very high arches and the longer distances tend to start hurting a lot lately, may need to start running with shoe inserts. Also have recurring plantar fasciitis but that doesn't bug me much anymore, once the calves and ankles loosen up and are warm, usually 1-2k into a run it goes away.

Oh and about the age question discussion above, my father in law is 67 and runs every race and parkrun I do and probably puts more hours into his training than I do LOL so there is a bit of motivation for you, his not that fast (still faster than anyone on their couch) but his very consistent in this times (always sub 36-39 on parkrun, we mainly run the tougher parkruns so not too bad times) and his pacing ability is really brilliant, he has done Comrades back in 1986 and has done countless marathons and half marathons but he stopped for over 30 years until my wife and I decided to get into running a few years ago. This past weekend he told us his decided his training to run a marathon again in the coming year or so.

Only three under my belt so far. Prefer it to road running tbh. Not so hectic on my knees.

Time seems to be around 30 minutes for 5k's. Did a 7k at 39:50.

As someone who's done both, I'm undecided on which I prefer. With road running, you have that peace of mind that the surface is consistent and as long as you watch out for things like cats eyes, you're not going to have a spill. This also means you can 'zone out', especially once you get into the longer distances, and let your mind wander. This helps pass the time and you don't become so aware of the fatigue creeping up on you.

Trail running on the other hand is the opposite. You have to be permanently mentally on it, otherwise you could be falling for days. The slightest root or stone could leave you stuffed, and the last thing you want at the top of a mountain is a buggered ankle. That being said, I love the challenge that trail running presents. It's precisely these previously mentioned aspects that make completing a trail run so fulfilling. And then there's the nature aspect. Getting out there into some simply stunning scenery is always a win in my book.

Also prefer trail over road bud. Feel you on the knee pain. Also run 3 or 4. Did the merrell springs 10k about 2 years at botanical gardens that ended up being closer to 12k because some clever tail enders from the 5k fun run decided to take the route markers as souvenirs not knowing the longer distance guys were still on the route, went down the side of a steep mountain with about 4 or 5 people following me, got almost all the way down and discovered a dead end, we all had to climb back up and find the right path again. Took me close to 2hour17 to run that one.

Done southern trails a few times also. Best time was a 1h38 for 10k but you cant run that course the whole way, you literally have to crawl under trees and over huge boulders LOL but loads of fun and awesome scenery from the top of the mountain.

Only started this year Feb but have a few trails planned thanks to KZN Trail Running. First one was in the Umkomaas Valley. I expected something like a Park Run so I was a tad horrified when I ended up scrambling up and down. But I've been hooked since then.

Had the same expectation at my 1st trail race, thought parkrun was trail running, was sorely mistaken LOL. Went out very hot with the front pack and as soon as we hit the first climb at around 1.2k I was gassed, literally had to stop, sit down on a rock and catch my breath, from there until the end I was finished, just couldn't get back into a rhythm. My second go on that course was much better, the course was around 1.5k longer and I did it just under 20 minutes faster than the first time, helps pacing from the start LOL

Im struggling quite a lot with plantar fasciitis (Self diagnosed).
No pain during running, but usually early morning i struggle quite alot.
After a few stretches its good. I've been rolling my legs with a foam roller, and my arches with a massage ball.
Any other recommendations?
