The Official Xiaomi Thread

And if customs figures this out, you are going to be nailed with a fine.

Meh

I'd love to see the legislation where it says the receiver is liable for a fine. Maybe the full import tax and vat on the correct value, but not a fine

Xiaomi Redmi 5A announced: very low price, very few changes

A couple of months after the unveiling of the Redmi Note 5A, it’s time for the more petite model to come one stage – meet the Xiaomi Redmi 5A. The phone will start at just CNY 600 ($91/€77), the same price tag that the 4A carried before it. It is one of the most affordable Androids, period.

On this tight budget, you get a 5” screen with 720p processor and a basic Snapdragon 425 chipset. The phone runs the new MIUI 9 and comes with 2GB of RAM and 16GB storage. You can add a microSD card if you need more storage (there’s a hybrid dual SIM slot).

The Redmi 5A has a 13MP main camera (f/2.2) and a 5MP selfie cam (f/2.0). As for video, 1080p @ 30fps is what you get.

Despite its model number, this doesn’t feel like a major upgrade over the Redmi 4A. The physical dimensions remain essentially the same while the battery capacity takes a minute hit - 3,000mAh (down 100mAH or so).

Still, you can’t argue with that price. If you’re interested, pre-orders in China start later today. Various online stores will carry the phone including the Xiaomi Mall, JD.com, Lynx and others.

Not exactly sure, but I think it can be one of 2 things:
1. The invoice states it is electronic goods/cellphone/etc, but the value is low. If you get a customs agent that is on the ball, he might suspect something is up and then open the package to inspect.
2. Unlucky randomness. I'm sure they do random checks on parcels. Maybe opening 1 out of every 1000 (or whatever number) to check if the contents match the invoice.

Contents declared as smart wristband, but parcel weight is 1.6KG! I am screwed, I am sure.

Xiaomi Mi A1 review - GSMArena

With the Xiaomi Mi 5X confined to the domestic Chinese market soon after launch, its double, the Mi A1, is called upon to boost the brand's global presence. Steered by Google, Android One is full of potential. Xiaomi's looking keen on getting its message across a wider audience and, of course, making some profit in the process with the Mi A1.

Slight topic change, but something I've been wondering. About two weeks ago I bought a Redmi Note 4 - happy with it, but I can't stand MIUI. Has anyone jumped over to Lineage OS? Happy / not happy with anything there?

A large part of me wanted to keep the phone stock, because of OTA updates and being able to use the fingerprint reader in the FNB app. But I miss the stock UI. And it would be nice to only have I want installed - not all the bloatware that comes with it.
Personally I don't think the bloatware is that bad for the Xiaomi's and compliments the phone. What about just using another launcher, like Nova launcher?

So I got my Mi 6 this morning early, nice surprise. Is there anything I need to do or know before downloading all of my apps etc?

Do I need to install a different ROM or launcher?
I currently have 2 phones so how will my whatsapp, telegram etc work on the 1 phone with 2 sim cards inside?

You can enable dual apps in settings to enable you to run 2 versions of WhatsApp on different numbers.

Download a bunch of launchers and try each one. Personally I don't like the stock Xiaomi launcher - too plain and boring, similar to iOS. I use "CM Launcher" off the Android playstore

Google will typically copy a lot of that stuff over, as long as you allow your previous phone to back that stuff up

Firefox has it"s own syncing mechanism? I don't this these will be copied over by google

Yeah got the firefox sync working thanks.

Dropped my phone today and the screen protector took a knock...or at least, I hope it did and that the screen itself is still intact :(

Cover on, but it fell face down onto an upside down plug. The neutral probe connected with the small strip of tempered glass between the speaker and the front camera holes and shattered it
