DA seem to have been pretty happy with Ramaphosa's address.

Seems like cautious positivity tbh.

I guess if you're the Official Opposition who's been mostly speaking sense for years and the ruling party finally listens to you (or seems to finally listen anyway), then I guess there's reason to be happy?

But I agree that these are only promises, now the gov/Rama has to implement them, and we know the ANC's track record with implementation...

I wonder if this could be the start of them warming up to a potential ANC coalition in 2024 with potential DA Ministers
Yeah, cause that would work out great for the DA, just like the ZANU-PF and MDC coalition did for the MDC in Zimbabwe /s

Nope, IMO if the DA wants to kamikaze themselves out of existence then they should do that, otherwise no

Any links to the law thats being proposed?

Oh well, but I do like the whole independent candidate thing he's promoting.

But anyway I think it will be pretty cool to see independent candidates in Parliament and provincial parliaments nationwide.
I wonder is how will the seats work? I mean let's say an independent wins 20 out of 40 seats in a province according to how they calculate seats for provincial/national elections? What then, does he just sit there in one seat with **** tons of empty seats around him or...?

Oh I'm fully behind the idea of independent candidates in National and provinicial parliaments.

For me I think the easiest option is a 50/50 split... 50% direct represenation for an area, and 50% proportional representation for the region/area

Yes, that is the question.
It would be fun though, imagine shooing other MPs away from your unoccupied seats.

Our politics still needs to evolve a bit because people by and large still vote according to brand lines.

Even if the DA/ANC field donkeys in their strongholds, chances are that they will still win them.

In about 20-30 years time, I do think independents will be a big thing and be winning chunks of power. The entire landscape will be different by then and we would most likely have seen a non ANC President.

So I actually need to read through the proposal to get a better understanding of it, but at this point I do see a potential issue...

Once the independent candidate has achieved their seat, the votes are "discarded" for the second round of calculations which means other parties effectively could get a boost in the chance of getting a seat which I could see being problematic.

That's bullshit
