Let's see...

Events leading to the attack

During the Six-Day War between Israel and several Arab nations, the United States of America maintained a neutral country status.[8] Several days before the war began, the USS Liberty was ordered to proceed to the eastern Mediterranean area to perform a signal intelligence collection mission in international waters near the north coast of Sinai, Egypt.[9] After the war erupted, due to concerns about her safety as she approached her patrol area, several messages were sent to Liberty to increase her allowable closest point of approach (CPA) to Egypt's and Israel's coasts from 12.5 nmi (14.4 mi; 23.2 km) and 6.5 nmi (7.5 mi; 12.0 km), respectively, to 20 nmi (23 mi; 37 km) and 15 nmi (17 mi; 28 km), and then later to 100 nmi (120 mi; 190 km) for both countries.[10] Unfortunately, due to ineffective message handling and routing, the CPA change messages were not received until after the attack.[10]

According to Israeli sources, at the start of the war on 5 June, General Yitzhak Rabin (then IDF Chief of Staff) informed Commander Ernest Carl Castle, the American Naval Attaché in Tel Aviv, that Israel would defend its coast with every means at its disposal, including sinking unidentified ships. Also, he asked the U.S. to keep its ships away from Israel's shore or at least inform Israel of their exact position.[11][12] The United States did not provide Israel any information about Liberty's mission or location.

Mmm mistakes happen. So, your point was..?

I think you meant

Indeed that is how it appears. Actually that is how it is.

However, it appears that the chemical attack backfired, as it looks set to prompt a major intervention from American and French troops aimed at crippling Assad's military capabilities.

In a telephone call which was tapped by German spy chiefs, a senior Hezbollah commander told the Iranian embassy in Lebanon that Syria's president intended to tilt the balance of power towards the regime in the battle for control of the country's capital.

So he gets told launch chemical weapon and we will intervene, assad does it when UN inspectors are in the country? Knowing no one would believe him, knowing russia would not support him if he was found to be using the chemicals he suddenly lost his nerve and ensured he will hit hard by the US?

Not saying it isn't possible, anything is possible like war based on secret undeniable evidence but logically i don't see it. two and half years and he suddenly loses his nerve as inspectors arrive? he had two and a half years to gas on a mass scale if he wanted but he chose to do when UN inspectors could collect information?

In no way am i ruling it out but it makes no sense to me, you have to have to sense if you can fight two and half years fairly easily, rebels were killing and fighting each other, kurds were going after al nusra for the slaughter of 450 innocent kurdish people. So assad had everything going in his favour, rebels fighting each other, kurds fighting al nusra, showing the world he was right from the beginning. Then he does the one thing that would tilt the war against him? Why does the article seem to indicate the attack would enhance his position when there was no red line for the rebels? Take the iunfo to putin i am telling you now he will back assads removal if it's proven true. Why would he think the one thing that would ensure his defeat would enhance his position?

Still asking questions that really do not matter...in an attempt to dismiss the mounting evidence from all sides...Shame.

Really? mounting evidence, undeniable evidence. Well i wonder why if they had voted today he would have lost with this mounting evidence and undeniable proof. http://www.politico.com/story/2013/09/obama-syria-house-vote-96347.html?hp=t1

Boy this vote will be interesting. Can't wait. It looks a tight one, i thought it would slide in easily well until kerry talked about ground troops and made numerous lies. I can only imagine what their undeniable stuff was like. Not very convincing. The US claimed they had intercepted the voice call, they were shot down saying israel did and now germany have claimed they did, extremely confusing when 3 countries intercept the same call, sound like something bush would try :p. Monday!!!!!!!!!!! go time or lame duck.

Evidence points to Assad using Chemical weapons: EU

Evidence points that the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons in an attack near Damascus last month, EU defence ministers have concluded.

"There are many signs that the regime used the (chemical) weapons," Lithuanian Defence Minister Juozas Olekas said as EU counterparts met in the Baltic state, which currently holds EU's rotating presidency.

Olekas said that although all his fellow ministers "condemned the use of chemical weapons and believed those responsible must be held accountable" there were "a variety of opinions" on what should be done in response.

Another EU official who spoke on condition of anonymity said France and Denmark were among the most vocal supporters of military intervention against the Assad regime, while Italy and Spain remained more sceptical.

"However, no one said that they would condemn it if there is military action," the official told AFP.

EU foreign ministers are also due to discuss Syria at their meeting in Vilnius on Friday, with US Secretary of State John Kerry due to join the talks on Saturday.

NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen said a firm international response was needed to Syria.

"The international community has a responsibility to uphold and enforce the international ban against the use of chemical weapons," he told reporters on Friday.

Russia warns against US targetting Syria's chemical arsenal

Russia on Friday warned the United States against targeting Syria's chemical arsenal as Washington considered the use of force against President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

"With particular concern we perceive the fact that military infrastructure facilities securing the integrity and safety of Syria's chemical arsenal are among the possible targets for military strikes," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

I wish they get to ban Killa from the news and current affairs forum. His conspiracies and anti USA vitriol needs to be in off topic. I come here to read developments about the specific headline and regularly find these threads defaced by his mindless blabber and verbal diarrhoea .

Dude, I'm not trying to be mean, but you are the one who insults him far more than he does to you.
My advice to you is to just stay on topic and deal with the content of the posts rather than the poster.
I don't want to see either of you guys banned! :D

The only reason is that he defaces these SAPA news threads with his continued conspiracy vitriol which is grating my ass.

Since this implementation there are far less issues in the current affairs section and all the news are coordinated better in valid threads thanks to one gentleman. :D.

Thanks for the advice. I will put the ... on ignore.

Haha
Things would most definitely not be the same without without him. Differing opinion is the very essence of discussion and debate, usually leading to closer scrutiny of the subject in question.
I understand your frustration - I threw in the towel a few days back to save myself having a mental meltdown, but everyone has the right to voice their opinion, no matter how crazy some may or may not think it might be.

Yeah but driving round a circle more than at least twice becomes questionable. Now you just make me to reconsider removing my one and only ignore.

Will wait and see how it pans out.

No problem. I used to have the same problem with him and others, but I decided it was not good for my health to get so het up.
So I decided to try the 'mellow pathway of enlightenment' and it's much easier.
Funny thing is... Killa has actually also mellowed a lot in the last year.
There used to be another Middle East Conflict Thread here a few years back.... go and read that and see who tense things used to be! :D

Edit: here it is....

Off Topic: I don't know why people get so upset with Killa. I have hardly ever seen him launch a personal attack at anyone yet he is constantly coming under attacks by others. And I have had my fair few debates/arguments with him yet have never felt the need to get personal with him nor has he done the same with me. And it is also a bit cheeky to complain about his opinions. This is a public forum where we are allowed to voice our thoughts and not all of us have the same views.

Back on topic; If the US and France attack Assad and the result is the fall of his regime, they better be prepared to assist the Syrian people in the following war against Al Nusra and her Al Qaeda allies. The US and France must not think they can launch a few missiles, topple Assad and go home as all will be fine and dandy. There is no quick out if they engage Syria. Well, there is, but then they must not bitch when they hand Syria to radical Islamists on a silver platter in the process.

Russian Ship heads for Syria

Another Russian ship from the Black Sea fleet has departed for Syria, the Interfax news agency reported, citing a source at navy headquarters.

The landing ship left the Black Sea port of Sevastopol on Friday morning for the eastern Mediterranean with "special cargo," according to the report carried by Interfax, a privately owned agency known for its independent contacts within Russia's armed forces.

The Defense Ministry was unable to confirm the ship's departure. Kremlin chief of staff Sergei Ivanov said Thursday that Russia is boosting its naval presence in the Mediterranean, but primarily in order to organize a possible evacuation of Russians from Syria. It is unclear how many ships Russia has there.

Reports of increased Russian naval presence near Syria have stoked fears of a larger international conflict if the United States orders airstrikes over a chemical weapons attack last month.

Syria Parliament urges US Congress to block Strikes

The head of Syria's parliament has urged the US Congress to vote against military action targeting the Syrian regime, state news agency SANA said on Friday.

"We urge you not to take reckless measures as you have the power to steer the United States from the path of war to that of diplomacy," SANA quoted parliament chief Jihad al-Lahham as saying.

The message is intended to be sent to every member of the US Congress before they vote on a request from US President Barack Obama for authorisation to use military force against Syria.

Obama has proposed limited strikes in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack on August 21, which Washington says was carried out by the Syrian regime, a charge it denies.

"Any military intervention would be illegal because Syria is a sovereign country and does not represent a threat to the United States, and any strike would not be authorised by the (UN) Security Council," Lahham said.

Earlier this month, Foreign Minister Faisal Muqdad urged the US Congress to "show wisdom" on the issue of authorising military strikes against Syria.

President Bashar al-Assad has also warned of the consequences of any such action.

"We cannot only talk about a Syrian response, but what could happen after the first strike," Assad said in an interview with Le Figaro newspaper.

"Everyone will lose control of the situation once the powder keg explodes. Chaos and extremism will spread. There is a risk of regional war."

Exactly & there's no way their going to do this without boots on the ground.
Is it even possible to strike a chemical stockpile without it just releasing everything anyway?, my guess is not, so all their really doing is working on ousting Assad by hitting other targets, which is just picking sides which they say their not doing...load of crock
